This is a seasonal position within the Parks & Recreation Department. Placement on the Seasonal Pay Scale and associated steps relate directly to Position, Qualifications, and Experience with the City of Pocatello. Employment with the City of Pocatello is contingent on passing a background check.
Job Description
Perform manual, skilled, and unskilled labor in the cleaning, maintenance and repair of grounds and facilities at and around City parks/facilities and on or adjacent to public rights-of-way. Performs general construction, maintenance, and repairs to a wide array of City buildings and infrastructure. This position requires applicants to be 16 years of age or older. The job requires working knowledge of construction and landscape techniques and general cleaning and janitorial methods. The job requires the ability to utilize hand and power tools in a safe manner. The job requires the ability to maintain a collaborative and cooperative working relationship with elected and appointed officials, other City employees, other organizations, and the general public. Individuals must be capable of operating vehicles safely and have an acceptable driving record. The work environment will include inside conditions, outdoor weather conditions, in wet and humid conditions, with areas of dust, odors, mist, gases or other airborne matter. Employees work in/at places where they are exposed to mechanical hazards. Employees will also drive a vehicle as part of this position. This position works days, evenings, and weekends as required.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Cemetery Grounds Laborer I (P02):
- Performs hand mowing, weed eating, tree maintenance, and general clean-up of the City's Mountain View & Restlawn Cemetery grounds on a daily basis.
- Execute safe handling & operation of various turf and landscaping equipment, including hand mowers, sod cutters, weed eaters, dump bed trucks, and other similar small equipment.
- Maintain minor mowing equipment, including: maintaining proper oil levels and keeping blades sharpened.
- Maintain minor irrigation system repairs, such as head replacements & rotor adjustments.
- Daily report assigned job completion status to supervisor.
- May be responsible for driving a City vehicle within various areas of Cemetery grounds, as well as traveling between Cemeteries, as assigned.
- Cemetery Grounds Laborer II (P03):
- Operate motorized turf area and landscaping equipment involved in the maintenance of the City's Mountain View & Restlawn Cemetery grounds on a daily basis, to include: riding mowers, dump bed & bucket trucks, etc.
- Maintain riding mowers, including: blade sharpening, periodic oil changes & checking fluid levels, preventative maintenance, and routine inspections to determine needed repairs.
- Use small hand & power tools and equipment in performance of duties, including chain saws, weed eaters, sod cutters, etc.
- Perform irrigation system repairs, including: head replacements & rotor adjustments, excavating and replacing irrigation pipe fittings & control valves, etc.
- Mix and apply weed control chemicals as needed and assigned, including: broad leaf and noxious weed control around trees & headstones.
- Assist Supervisory Staff in grave site/funeral duties, including: burial set-ups & take downs including compaction, tent set-up, transporting burial related tools & equipment, and operating dump trucks.
- Responsible for driving a City vehicle within various areas of Cemetery grounds, as well as to travel between Cemeteries, as assigned.
Acceptable Experience, Training, Licenses and/or Certifications:
- Applicant must be 16 years of age or older.
- A high school diploma or GED is preferred; Two (2) to five (5) years of experience may be required.
- Specialized certifications, construction and/or supervisory experience may be required.
- An Idaho Drivers license is required.
An equivalent combination of education and experience that provides the Required Skills, Knowledge And Abilities To Successfully Perform the essential functions of the position may be considered.
