Lumber Specialties operates multiple facilities totaling over 100,000 square feet in Iowa and Illinois, producing roof and floor trusses, wall panels, and engineered wood products.
About the role
The CDL Wide Load is responsible for the safe, efficient transportation of wall panels, trusses, and other materials to job sites and other locations. This role requires a Class A or B Driver's license and may involve overnight stays.
Responsibilities
- Operates Class A or B commercial vehicles in a safe, compliant, and efficient manner.
- Responsible for deliveries to active construction sites and completed build locations; city-based deliveries and inter-state travel may be required.
- Performs thorough pre-trip and post-trip DOT inspections to ensure vehicle safety and compliance with federal regulations.
- Provides exceptional customer service by maintaining a professional demeanor, addressing client needs, representing the company positively during all interactions, and relaying messages received from customers while on job sites.
- Organizes and secures loads to ensure safe transport and verifies orders for accuracy before departure and upon delivery.
- Adheres to all regulations and safety guidelines established by the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) and complies with all regulations and conditions outlined in applicable permits.
- Prepares and maintains accurate DOT-compliant logs of driving hours, on-duty time, and rest periods in accordance with federal regulations.
- Delivers and unloads materials accurately and safely, ensuring customer satisfaction at the point of delivery.
- Records all merchandise returned by truck and assists in unloading materials returned for credit, ensuring proper documentation and handling.
- Safely and efficiently operates a truck-mounted forklift to load, unload, and transport materials at job sites.
- Maintains the cleanliness and organization of the truck, ensuring it is well-kept and ready for operation.
- Affixes and removes signs, performs minor repairs, and assists with stocking and organizing inventory in the warehouse and production areas.
- Operates a roll-off trailer or other specialty equipment to transport oversized or overweight loads.
Requirements
- 3+ CDL experience preferred.
- Experience transporting and handling lumber and building materials required.
- Experience transporting wide loads or oversized freight preferred.
- Experience operating roll-off trucks and other specialty trailers, including loading, unloading, and secure transport of materials preferred.
Qualifications
- High School Diploma or GED required.
Skills and Abilities
- Basic math skills.
- Effective communication skills.
- Safe lifting techniques.
- Proficiency with current technologies (e.g. Smartphone, GPS).
- Collaborative skills.
- Knowledge of federal DOT regulations, logbook requirements, and HOS compliance.
- Comprehensive knowledge of wide load safety regulations and procedures.
- Ability to safely handle oversized loads, follow special permitting requirements, and coordinate with site personnel.
- Knowledge of wide load permits, routing regulations, and escort requirements.
Licenses and Certifications
- Class A CDL License required.
- Class B CDL License required.
- Certified Drill Rig Operator-NCCCO Boom Certification preferred for Boom Crane CDL Driver positions.
Pay
Pay Range: $25.00 - $32.00/hr.
