About the role

The Connecticut Department of Transportation is seeking Statewide CDL Drivers within District 4. Ideal candidates should hold a valid Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with Tanker and Airbrakes endorsements, a valid Medical Examiners Card, and meet specific OSHA requirements for bridge positions.

Responsibilities

• Perform a full range of tasks in the construction, maintenance, and repair of state roadways, bridges, and more.
• Maintain small and less complex mechanical equipment or assist on larger equipment.
• Operate and maintain complex mechanical equipment.
• Work as a moderately skilled mechanic in garages for routine repair of mechanical equipment.
• Drive trucks and equipment such as dump trucks, platform trucks, and trailers.
• Operate bituminous curbing machines, pothole patchers, mowers, chain saws, culvert cleaning machines, compressors, concrete mixers, vibrators, hydraulic tools, test boring equipment, and wing plows.
• Survey monument setting, burning, cutting with an acetylene torch, and flagging traffic.
• Assist in stores section material handling and perform moderately skilled tasks in construction, maintenance, mechanical repair, electrical, carpentry, masonry, welding, plumbing, painting, relief ferry mate, drawbridge attendant, and rest area attendant roles.
• Assist in preparing and checking various reports and operating a two-way radio in a District Maintenance unit.
• Perform wildlife hazard control, radio monitoring, and communication.
• Guard/watch areas, escort vendors, contractors, and respond to fire and crash emergencies at state-owned airports.

Requirements

• Valid Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) Class A or B with Tanker and Airbrakes endorsement.
• Valid Medical Examiners Card (MEC).
• Must be medically cleared for a respirator, cannot have facial hair, and meet equipment weight requirements.
• Night work required, especially during winter months from November 1 through April 30.
• Two years of experience operating a commercial motor vehicle as part of military job requirements may qualify for these opportunities.
• Military members and recently honorably discharged veterans must meet OSHA Standard 1910.134 requirements.

Qualifications

• One (1) year of experience in the construction, landscaping, commercial driving, snow plowing, maintenance and repair of roadsides, roadways, bridges, or airports.
• Experience operating and making routine repairs to complex mechanical equipment.
• Ability to operate and maintain various types of equipment and machinery.
• Knowledge of construction, maintenance, and repair techniques for roadsides, roadways, bridges, and airports.
• Skills in interpersonal communication, written and oral communication, and computer software usage.

Skills

• Operate and maintain complex mechanical equipment.
• Perform moderately skilled tasks in construction, maintenance, and repair.
• Communicate effectively with coworkers and supervisors.
• Utilize computer software for reporting and record-keeping.

Schedule

Monday - Friday, Full-time (40 hours per week), First shift (7:30 AM - 4:00 PM), On-site work environment.
