About the Department

The mission of the Tennessee Department of Safety and Homeland Security is to serve, secure, and protect the people of Tennessee. The department ensures the safety and general welfare of the public through the operations of its six primary divisions: Tennessee Highway Patrol, Driver Services, Tennessee Highway Safety Office, Office of Homeland Security, Tennessee Advanced Communications Network (TACN), and Administrative Services. Headquartered in Nashville, the department maintains a strong statewide presence with approximately 2,500 employees.

About the Role

This position currently follows a hybrid schedule. After onboarding, employees generally work two days per week in the Nashville office and three days remotely. Travel within Tennessee is required for on-site work and stakeholder meetings. Hybrid expectations may change based on operational needs or leadership direction, and additional in-office days may be required with limited notice.

The Internal Audit Division is seeking an experienced auditor committed to supporting the department's mission. As a Commercial Driver License (CDL) Auditor 3, you will conduct compliance engagements of CDL examination entities and examiners in accordance with federal regulations. You will independently perform audits or lead a small audit team and may be assigned uniquely complex audits and special projects requested by senior leadership.

Responsibilities

  • Develop expert knowledge of federal and state regulations governing the CDL examination process.
  • Audit CDL testing agencies and examiners to ensure compliance with FMCSA, AAMVA, and state regulations.
  • Evaluate CDL examiners' knowledge, skills, and abilities during CDL test administration.
  • Confirm applicant and examiner qualifications meet all federal and state requirements.
  • Draft clear, detailed audit reports with findings and recommended corrective actions.
  • Support additional departmental needs, including special projects as assigned.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree preferred. However, the requirement will be waived for applicants with significant experience as a CDL examiner (over 3 years).
  • Ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions and enter/exit commercial vehicles.
  • Willingness and ability to obtain extensive knowledge of federal and state CDL regulations.
  • Willingness and ability to acquire basic knowledge of commercial vehicle functionality.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications is essential.
  • Ability to travel overnight as needed.

Qualifications

  • Professional certifications such as CPA, CIA, or CFE.
  • Strong compliance auditing experience.
  • Experience with the CDL examination process.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Strong analytical, critical thinking, and problem-solving abilities.
  • Detail-oriented and self-motivated.
  • Highly organized with strong multitasking abilities.
