CDC Office and Location: Two ORISE fellowships are available in the Division of Environmental Health Science and Practice (DEHSP) within the National Center for Environmental Health (NCEH) at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta, Georgia. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is one of the major operation components of the Department of Health and Human Services. To accomplish its mission, CDC conducts important science and provides health information that protects our nation against expensive and dangerous health threats, and responds when these arise. DEHSP promotes and protects the health and quality of life of all people in the United States through conducting environmental health science and improving environmental health services. Its mission is supported by surveillance, epidemiological studies, technical assistance, training, and emergency response activities through programs that provide critical environmental health capacity for state, tribal, local, and territorial health departments and other agencies with related responsibilities. Research Project: You will train in the Lead Poisoning Prevention and Surveillance Branch as part of the Childhood Lead Poisoning Prevention Program’s surveillance and prevention activities. This training opportunity will provide you with hands-on experience in Lead Poisoning and Prevention and Surveillance. Under the guidance of CDC scientists and subject matter experts, you will gain practical experience in analyzing environmental head data, exploring health surveillance tools, and learning how scientific information is translated in resources that support policies, and the importance of lead poisoning prevention. Learning Objectives: You will train with a diverse set of public health program professionals and also train in the following activities: Participate in training related to lead poisoning and prevention.Learn approaches used to explore, summarize and interpret data from communities, tribes and tribal organizations, community based organizations and partners to enhance health quality related to lead poisoning. Observe and collaborate on the evaluation and enhancement of lead poisoning prevention to address policy barriers to inform and increase the awareness among current and prospective partners.Participate in collaborative discussions with CDC scientists, public health advisors, and partners to gain insight of Notice of Funding Opportunities (NOFOs). Develop skills in preparing reports, summaries, briefing materials, and presentations for technical and public health audiences.Participate in scientific meetings, and professional development activities to increase understanding of environmental health, childhood lead poisoning and prevention, and enhance blood lead testing and reporting. Training in understanding and keeping up to date on local, national, and international policies and trends that affect the organization and shape stakeholders' views and on awareness of the organization's impact on the external environment.Training to identify public health issues for possible intervention.Training in developing and testing concepts and strategies to implement program initiatives including alternative courses of action.Training in decision-making and strategic planning.Training in conducting program evaluations using various methods (formative, process, outcome, impact, and cost-benefit).Training in identifying barriers to successful program implementation and identifies solutions to ensure accomplishment of program goals.Training in collaborating and communicating with colleagues, key partners, and other public health professionals inside and outside the agency to identify and address public health issues related to childhood lead poisoning prevention and surveillance. Appointment Length: The appointment will initially be for one year, but may be renewed upon recommendation of CDC and is contingent on the availability of funds. ORISE Information: This program, administered by ORAU through its contract with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) to manage the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE), was established through an interagency agreement between DOE and CDC. Participants do not become employees of CDC, DOE or the program administrator, and there are no employment-related benefits. Proof of health insurance is required for participation in this program. Qualifications The qualified candidate should be currently pursuing or have received a master's or doctoral degree in the one of the relevant fields (Public Health, Environmental Heath, Epidemiology, Environmental Science or a closely related field). Degree must have been received within the past five years, or be currently pursuing. Preferred Skills Coursework or academic research demonstrating a strong foundation in environmental health, lead poisoning and prevention and public health surveillance.Candidates with graduate-level research experience involving lead poisoning prevention, environmental exposures, health outcomes, public health data systems, epidemiological studies, technical assistance and a focus on community-based organizations and partnerships are strongly preferred. Strong oral and written communication skills.Demonstrated ability to organize and manage multiple projects while researching both independently and collaboratively in a multidisciplinary environment. Familiarity with public health surveillance systems is desirable.Strong organizational skills and attention to details.
