The National Center for Chronic Disease Prevention and Health Promotion (NCCDPHP), Division of Cancer Prevention and Control (DCPC), Comprehensive Cancer Control Branch (CCCB) supports national, state, tribal, and territorial cancer control initiatives through program funding, evaluation, science translation, technical assistance, training, and partnership development. About the Role

This fellowship provides a master-level trainee an immersive, practice-focused experience in population-based cancer prevention and control. The opportunity combines applied learning with mentorship to explore ways to strengthen systems for collaboration, knowledge sharing, and program evaluation across comprehensive cancer prevention and control partnership initiatives.

The fellow will train by conducting activities related to the planning, implementation, and evaluation of cancer prevention and control partnership initiatives with national, state, tribal, territorial, and community-based organizations. This is an educational opportunity designed to complement academic background and foster growth in areas aligned with CDC’s mission. The fellow will not supervise staff, manage budgets, or act as a federal representative.

Responsibilities

• Participate in the evaluation of cancer prevention and control partnership initiatives.
• Assist in the development and implementation of partnership plans.
• Gain experience monitoring, documenting, and reporting accomplishments of partnership initiatives.
• Prepare health communication materials for practice and scientific audiences.
• Participate in multidisciplinary discussions and professional meetings with partner organizations.

Learning Objectives

Under the guidance of senior scientists and public health advisors within DCPC, the fellow will gain experience in:

• Identifying, assessing, and cultivating strategic partnerships aligned with organizational goals.
• Designing and implementing public health program evaluations using quantitative and qualitative data analysis methods.
• Reporting evaluation results using data visualization techniques.
• Creating strategic plans using stakeholder engagement methods.
• Preparing materials and publications for practice and science audiences using health communication and science communication best practices.
• Training on efforts that foster collaboration, knowledge exchange, capacity building, and programmatic synergies among internal and external partners.

Qualifications

• The qualified candidate should have received a master's degree in a relevant field within the past five years.

Schedule

• Anticipated appointment start date: September 13, 2026 (flexible depending on various factors).
• Appointment length: Initially for one year, renewable upon recommendation and contingent on the availability of funds.
• Level of participation: Full-time.

Pay

Stipend rates may vary based on opportunity, location, education, and experience. If interviewed, you may inquire about the exact stipend rate at that time.

Eligibility Requirements

• Citizenship: U.S. citizens only.
• Degree: Master's degree received within the last 60 months.
• Discipline: Life, Health, and Medical Sciences.
• Affirmation: Must certify no prior employment by CDC or its contractors (exceptions may apply for new STEM degrees necessitating training in a new field).

Proof of health insurance is required for participation in this program. Participants must comply with Environmental, Safety, and Health (ES&H) requirements of the hosting facility, including COVID-19 protocols.
