CBA Aircraft Painter - T45 Program

Responsibilities

The Aircraft Painter is responsible for preparing, painting, and finishing aircraft, aircraft components, and support equipment in accordance with technical manuals, quality standards, and safety regulations. This role includes surface preparation, corrosion identification and treatment, paint mixing and application, and detail touch-up work to maintain the airworthiness and appearance of aircraft and related equipment. This position has no supervisory responsibilities.

• Surface Preparation and Corrosion Control
  • Inspect aircraft, support equipment, components, engines, and accessories for surface integrity or corrosion in accordance with Maintenance Instruction Manuals (MIMs), Illustrated Parts Breakdowns (IPBs), Technical Directives (TDs), Maintenance Check Lists (MCLs), and company work instructions.
  • Identify, remove, and treat corrosion using approved tools, equipment, and techniques, including abrasive blasting.
  • Remove existing paint or protective coatings using approved tools, agents, and techniques.
  • Clean and degrease parts using specified cleaning solutions, and sand components as needed to prepare surfaces for painting.
  • Mask, cover, or otherwise protect surfaces and components not being painted.
• Painting and Finishing
  • Blend and mix paints, inks, and coatings to the proper spraying consistency.
  • Paint aircraft interiors, exteriors, piece parts, engines, and aeronautical support equipment using approved industrial painting tools, materials, and equipment.
  • Apply insignia, lettering, and numerals as required.
  • Perform detail work and touch-ups to meet quality and cosmetic standards.
  • Set up and coordinate processes for painting production parts, and route completed components to the next stage of the overhaul cycle.
• Coordination, Documentation, and Compliance
  • Coordinate with supervision and Quality Control to resolve questions regarding serviceability or repair procedures.
  • Document completed work on Maintenance Action Forms (VIDS/MAFs) or in the NALCOMIS/OOMA system, and perform basic computer data entry and retrieval as needed.
  • Assist with ordering parts, tools, materials, and equipment as required.
  • Maintain cleanliness and organization of the work center and assigned work area.
  • Perform preventive maintenance on assigned shop and support equipment.
  • Maintain a working knowledge of Safety Data Sheets (SDS) and associated safety precautions.
  • Comply with the company tool control program and all Foreign Object Damage (FOD) prevention rules, including participation in FOD walk-downs as directed.
  • Comply with general and industrial safety rules and regulations applicable to the contract, facility, and job assignment, and maintain familiarity with OPNAVINST 4790.2 and other applicable Navy instructions.
  • Comply with the hazardous waste program and applicable local, state, and federal Environmental Protection Agency regulations, including proper handling and disposal of hazardous waste.
  • Assist in safeguarding the security and preservation of government-owned and company-owned equipment.

• Additional Duties (as Assigned Or Qualified)
  • May perform off-site services while assigned to detachments.
  • May serve as Hazardous Waste Coordinator, Chemical Waste Custodian, or Accumulation Point Coordinator when authorized and designated.
  • May become qualified and certified in Aircraft and Support Equipment Wheel and Tire, Aircraft Jacking, or Aircraft Towing, and may fill in for those technicians during leave, breaks, reserve duty, or peak workload periods.
  • May serve as a Collateral Duty Inspector where required.
  • Perform other reasonably related duties as directed.

Physical Demands and Work Environment

This position is typically performed in a paint shop environment and involves the physical movements and postures associated with painting and surface preparation work. The employee is regularly required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; and talk or hear. The employee frequently sits, and occasionally stands, walks, and must be able to taste or smell. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required include close vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. Work conditions may range from minimal physical discomfort to exposure to inclement weather (temperature extremes, wind, rain), high-noise areas, airborne fumes or particles, and electrical shock hazards. The employee must be able to wear a full-face respirator with a proper seal and pass required respirator fit testing.

Qualifications

• Education And Experience
  • High school diploma or GED equivalent, plus two (2) years of work experience directly related to aircraft maintenance or component maintenance.
  • Within the past six (6) years, three (3) years of experience in at least one of the following: corrosion identification, removal, treatment, and preservation on aircraft and aircraft components; equivalent civilian painting experience; or documented completion of an OJT syllabus for the applicable Type/Model/Series (T/M/S).
  • A&P Certification preferred.
• Required Training / Certification (at Least One)
  • Resident 40-hour course of instruction in corrosion removal, prevention, and treatment (not required for Support Equipment Painters), or a civilian-equivalent paint and finish school.
  • Resident 80-hour course of instruction on Naval Aircraft Painting and Touch-up, equivalent to the Naval Aviation Depot (NADEP) paint course, or a documented local OJT training syllabus demonstrating paint and finish aptitude.

• Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities
  • Working knowledge of aircraft sheet metal repair and component repair.
  • Familiarity with instrument, electronic, and electrical test equipment.
  • Understanding of military or commercial aviation maintenance and associated terminology.
  • Knowledge of U.S. government regulations for federal contractors and FAA maintenance programs.
  • Proficiency with databases and computer systems sufficient to perform job-related duties.
  • Ability to read, write legibly, speak, and understand English.
• Licensing And Physical/Administrative Requirements
  • Valid state driver's license, with ability to meet government licensing requirements.
  • Must pass a pre-employment and annual Pulmonary Function Test (PFT) for use of a supplied-air respirator, as well as a company physical prior to employment/promotion and annually thereafter.
  • Must be able to work weekends, other shifts, and overtime as required.
  • Some travel may be required.
  • Must adhere to all company policies, procedures, and management instructions.

  • This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a Department of Defense (DoD) CAC (Commons Access Card).
