CASEWORKER MANG UNIT - STROGER

This position is covered by the collective bargaining agreement between Cook County and the AFSCME Union. Internal eligible applicants will be considered prior to external applicants.

About the role

The Case Worker in the Mang Unit assists Cook County Health (CCH) patients by providing comprehensive interviews and screenings to identify qualified programs and assess patients' ability to pay for medical services. The Caseworker assists patients with various application and authorization processes through the gathering and analysis of pertinent financial, demographic, and other data to acquire medical assistance under Medicaid, Medicare, Commercial Insurance, approved payment arrangements, or Financial Assistance.

Responsibilities

• Interviews patients and/or their representatives to obtain demographic and financial information to complete quality applications.
• Provides document forms and explains Illinois Department of Human Services (IDHS) policies and procedures.
• Verifies patient demographics during the screening process for the purpose of updating hospital data.
• Maintains patient logs required for daily statistical productivity reports.
• Completes and routes patient case folders with pertinent information for billing and collection purposes.
• Completes and returns all assigned cases consistent with established productivity standards.
• Updates hospital information system with appropriate documents.
• Performs other duties as assigned.

Requirements

• High School Diploma with four (4) years of work experience in hospital finance/revenue cycle operations, OR Bachelor’s degree or higher in Business, Finance, Social Work, or a Behavioral Science from an accredited college or university with two (2) years of experience in hospital finance/revenue cycle operations. (Official transcripts and/or high school diploma must be presented at time of interview).

Skills

• Knowledge of the Managed Care environment, third-party reimbursement, hospital and community services, and healthcare policies.
• Knowledge of Medicaid eligibility requirements and Cook County Health and Department of Human Services policies and procedures.
• Ability to compile, organize, prepare, and maintain records and information according to CCH policies and procedures.
• Strong customer service skills with the ability to work with a multi-culturally and economically diverse patient population.
• Ability to organize tasks, establish priorities, and respond to changing conditions and emergencies.
• Sensitivity to the needs of a multi-cultural community.
• Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with coworkers and clients in a stressful environment.
• Strong written and oral communication skills necessary to explain CCH application processes to patients and their families.

• Attention to detail, especially as it relates to obtaining pertinent financial, demographic, and other data necessary to complete medical assistance applications.
• Ability to maintain confidential patient records.
• Computer skills necessary to complete the patient application process.
• Ability to use judgment in routine and non-routine situations.

Physical and Environmental Demands

This position functions within a healthcare environment. The incumbent must adhere to all hospital and department-specific safety requirements, including:

• Complying with Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) requirements.
• Following hand washing and sanitizing practices.
• Adhering to department-specific engineering and work practice controls.
• Following any other work area safety precautions specified by hospital-wide policy and departmental procedures.

Schedule

• Various shifts available: 7:00 AM – 3:00 PM, 8:00 AM – 4:00 PM, 9:00 AM – 5:00 PM, 1:00 PM – 9:00 PM, 2:00 PM – 10:00 PM.

Pay

$33.41 per hour.

Veteran Preference

Preference is given to honorably discharged Veterans who have served in the U.S. Armed Forces for not less than 6 months of continuous service. Veterans must meet the minimum qualifications for the position and provide applicable discharge papers (DD 214, DD 215, or NGB 22) or a valid State ID/Driver’s License identifying the holder as a Veteran at the time of application or interview.
