Carpentry Technician (Theatrical) - Drawn to Life

About the role

We are looking for a Carpentry Technician to run multiple show tracks in an efficient and safe manner, in accordance with Cirque du Soleil standards and policies. The role involves daily maintenance, inspections, and training per the artistic schedule. Technicians will collaborate with other departments to meet the daily needs of the production.

The ideal candidate will have the ability to critically analyze problems to find solutions and possess strong organizational skills.

Responsibilities

• Run cue tracks to position scenic elements and related equipment as directed for performances, artist training, and maintenance.
• Maintain stage and backstage areas.
• Inspect and repair stage equipment.
• Update maintenance and inspection records as directed.
• Maintain all Carpentry documentation related to the maintenance, operation, etc. of equipment, systems, and tracks.
• Assist with inventory by identifying additional equipment needs and communicate with the Lead when necessary.
• Participate in special projects, including the construction and installation of new show elements and other Carpentry-related tasks.
• Maintain a flexible schedule for projects.
• Cooperate with other departments to ensure safe training, rehearsal, and show environments.
• Develop a thorough knowledge of all carpentry department equipment specific to the production to operate it safely.
• Adhere to and promote all Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) regulations related to the safe operation of show elements.
• Participate in all required health and safety classes and emergency rescue procedure training.
• Contribute to a safe and positive working environment by following Cirque du Soleil standards, values, policies, and regulations.
• Assist other departments when necessary for cross-departmental support.
• Complete other job-related duties as assigned.

Requirements

• High School Diploma and/or GED required.
• At least one year of previous experience as a professional Stage Carpenter working on large-scale productions.
• Previous experience working as a run crew technician and running show cue tracks.
• Advanced power and hand tool skills.
• Standard theatrical construction technique experience.
• Working knowledge of Microsoft applications (Word, Excel, and Outlook).

Qualifications (Assets)

• Knowledge of basic mechanics, electricity, and electronics.
• Previous experience in finish carpentry or scenic painting.
• Welding certification.
• Previous experience working with metal, woodworking, rigging, welding, mechanical, and pneumatic systems.
• Formal fall protection and overall safety training.
• Ability to obtain an OSHA 10 course completion card.
• Fluent in English, both written and spoken.

Skills

• Ability to perform essential job functions, including but not limited to: crouching, kneeling, standing, lifting (sometimes for extended periods), operating various lifts and heavy equipment, and lifting at least 50 lbs unassisted.
