Carpenter - Campus Facilities Management

About the role

This Carpenter position is part of the Campus Facilities Management (CFM) team and is responsible for performing skilled journey-level work in the construction, maintenance, repair, and alteration of campus structures and equipment. All work is subject to inspection for conformance to specifications and accepted trade standards.

Responsibilities

• Perform repair, service, and maintenance of the physical structure of one or more buildings.
• Construct, erect, install, and repair structures and fixtures of wood, plywood, and wallboard using carpenter’s hand tools and power tools in conformance with local building codes.
• Prepare layouts, mark cutting and assembly lines, shape materials to prescribed measurements, and assemble materials using nails, dowel pins, or glue.
• Verify trueness of structures with plumb bob and carpenter’s level.
• Study blueprints, sketches, or building plans to determine material requirements and dimensions; prepare cost estimates, maintain records, and prepare reports.
• Perform or assist with tasks including:
  • Erecting metal or wood frameworks and laying sub-flooring.
  • Installing hardwood, parquet, and wood-strip-block floors.
  • Installing floor coverings, roofing, tar, screens, cabinets, window glass, partitions, locks, and other fixtures.
  • Repairing and installing wood floors, stairs, windows, and doors.
  • Building and installing partitions and cabinet work.
  • Applying paneling to ceilings and walls.
  • Installing prefabricated window frames, doors, door frames, weather stripping, and finish hardware.
  • Constructing forms and chutes for pouring concrete.
  • Erecting scaffolding and ladders for assembling structures above ground level.
  • Hanging sheetrock and installing grid ceilings.
• Utilize a variety of tools and mechanical equipment required for repair, maintenance, and service of buildings.
• Notify supervisor of tasks requiring other trades staff.
• Prepare cost estimates, material orders, reports, and maintain records.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements

• High school diploma or equivalent combination of education and experience.
• Four years of actual work experience and training, including apprenticeship or vocational training in a building trade.
• Knowledge of tools, methods, and materials used in carpentry.
• Valid Missouri driver’s license.
• Ability to read blueprints, plans, and drawings.
• Physical ability to:
  • Grasp, lift, carry, and set down heavy objects (50-75 lbs.).
  • Shovel snow, climb ladders, and operate heavy power equipment.
• May be required to wear a respirator or self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA) depending on the nature of the work.

Schedule

7:00 AM – 3:30 PM, Monday through Friday.

Pay

The anticipated hiring range for this position is $25.00 to $28.00 hourly. This position is eligible for a $1,500 hiring incentive. Salary is determined by education, skills, experience, and organizational requirements.

This is a union-eligible position under Local 955.
