Career Experience Program Representative I

This is a temporary, non-credit bearing position for high school students. The pay range is $17.50 - $22.79 per hour, with individual rates determined by factors including market data, education, experience, qualifications, expertise, and internal equity.

Responsibilities

• Assist with daily operations and administrative tasks, including inventory distribution of microfluidics components to TraCe users within the lab and external labs, and logging new inventory into the lab system.
• Participate in team meetings and assist with project coordination, including developing project outlines and timelines for microplastics research, and presenting experimental findings to the manager and other groups during all-hands and subcommittee meetings.
• Develop communication, organizational, and problem-solving skills by proposing experimental conditions and project direction in writing, executing experiments with assistance as needed, and organizing, analyzing, and categorizing data for future use.
• Solve problems related to experimental set-up, such as pressure-driven systems and water sample analysis.
• Maintain confidentiality and adhere to lab policies by keeping unpublished lab-specific operations secure and maintaining a lab notebook that does not leave the lab. Share findings only with relevant lab members.
• Provide support for special projects as needed, including running or maintaining experiments when lab members are unavailable, within the scope of the student's training.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements

• Enrollment in high school or equivalent combination of education and experience.
• Basic computer skills.
• Eagerness to learn and gain experience in a professional setting.
• Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
• Positive attitude and strong work ethic.
• Must meet all NYS and Federal regulations to work as a minor, including working papers (if applicable based on age) upon hire.

About the Role

This role serves as an introduction to potential careers for high school students within the Biomedical Engineering department, specifically in the McGrath lab. The position focuses on research projects related to the TraCe and LOMP Centers, including running experiments and performing data analysis. It is designed to help students develop valuable workplace skills, explore career paths, and contribute to the lab's success. This position can only be held while the student is in high school.
