About the role

Assesses Detroit At Work Career Center customers’ career readiness and provides career coaching services.

Responsibilities

  • Interviews customers to assess service needs; reviews applications and documentation to identify possible barriers.
  • Develops a Career Plan (individual employment plan or strategy) jointly with the customer, identifying interests, goals, needs, and placement strategy.
  • Assesses career and job readiness and recommends strategies to enhance marketability, including referrals to training or workshops.
  • Assists with administering career and job readiness assessment instruments.
  • Identifies problem areas and service gaps, ensures implementation of the Career Plan, and prepares reports on barriers to services.
  • Provides counseling, intervention, and supportive services to address barriers; makes referrals as needed.
  • Ensures customers are connected with job placement services and works closely with Talent Sourcing Specialists for successful outcomes.
  • Maintains case reporting in MIS systems, including program activities, attendance records, progress reports, and other required documentation.
  • Re-engages customers requiring additional employment and career coaching services and documents efforts and outcomes.
  • Maintains knowledge of current labor market and occupational trends and recommends policy or procedural changes to management.
  • Attends meetings as required by SERCO, training institutions, or other agencies to address participant concerns.
  • Conducts home visits or meets with participants in public settings as necessary.
  • Contributes to team efforts by performing other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university.
  • Experience in career planning, placement, employment, training, or a related field preferred.
  • Knowledge of education, training, and community resources; career coaching principles, objectives, standards, and methods; and program policies and procedures.
  • Ability and desire to work with a diverse population of customers with varying needs.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Access).
  • Bilingual language skills preferred.
  • Must possess and provide a valid Michigan Driver’s License.
  • Must be willing to work a flexible schedule and have access to reliable transportation.

  • Regularly required to see, talk, and hear.
  • Frequently required to stand, walk, sit for extended periods, and use hands, arms, and fingers to operate office equipment.
  • Must be able to lift a minimum of 10 pounds.

  • Operates in a normal office or school environment with moderate noise levels.
  • Routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets, and fax machines.
