Cardiac Surgical Specialist, Cardiothoracic, Full Time

About the role

The Cardiac Surgical Specialist provides assistance to the primary surgeon during a surgical procedure. Key responsibilities include positioning the patient for optimal exposure, assisting with hemostasis, closure, and other intraoperative tasks, and performing preoperative and postoperative duties.

Responsibilities

• Positions the patient to give the best exposure for the surgical procedure considering the patient's comfort and safety.
• Evaluates the patient for any possible damage from positioning and reports any abnormalities to the surgeon.
• Utilizes proper techniques to visualize the operative site.
• Aids in hemostasis using appropriate techniques, including volume replacement or auto-transfusion as needed.
• Aids in closure of body planes and selects and applies appropriate wound dressings.
• Secures drainage systems to tissue as required.
• Performs other duties as required.
• Maintains established hospital policies, procedures, directives, quality, safety, environmental, and infection control standards.
• Adheres to University and unit-level policies and procedures and safeguards University assets.

Qualifications

• Education: Bachelor’s degree in relevant field.
• Certification and Licensing: Valid Basis Life Support (BLS) certification and Valid Surgical Assistant (SA-C) by the American Board of Surgical Assistants (ABSA) certification.
• Experience: Minimum 2 years of relevant experience.
• Knowledge, Skills, and Attitudes: Skill in completing assignments accurately and with attention to detail; ability to analyze, organize, and prioritize work under pressure; ability to process and handle confidential information with discretion; ability to work evenings, nights, and weekends as necessary; commitment to the University’s core values; ability to work independently and/or in a collaborative environment.
