Cardiac Sonographer

Facility: Heart Hospital, Sioux Falls, SD

About the role

Performs echocardiography tests and procedures in accordance with the American Society of Echocardiography standards. Prepares patients for exams by explaining procedures, transferring patients to the ultrasound table, applying gel, and positioning patients properly. Operates ultrasound equipment to produce and record images of the motion, shape, and composition of blood, organs, tissues, or bodily masses. Provides an oral and/or written preliminary summary of technical findings to the interpreting physician for medical diagnosis. Utilizes new sonographic technologies as needed and performs routine cardiac ultrasound procedures in clinic, hospital, and mobile settings. Assists in maintaining Intersocietal Accreditation Commission (IAC) accreditation and supervises or trains students and cardiac sonographers as required.

Responsibilities

• Perform echocardiography tests and procedures following American Society of Echocardiography standards.
• Prepare patients for exams, including explaining procedures, positioning, and applying gel.
• Operate ultrasound equipment to capture images of blood, organs, tissues, or bodily masses.
• Provide oral and/or written preliminary summaries of technical findings to interpreting physicians.
• Utilize new sonographic technologies as needed.
• Perform routine cardiac ultrasound procedures in clinic, hospital, and mobile sites.
• Interact professionally with healthcare professionals.
• Assist in submission and maintenance of Intersocietal Accreditation Commission (IAC) accreditation.
• Supervise or train students and cardiac sonographers.
• Adhere to safety, infection control, and HIPAA policies.
• Based on facility, may expand responsibilities to include ultrasonography.

Requirements

• Basic Life Support (BLS) certification within six weeks of employment and re-certification as necessary.
• Maintenance of a valid driver’s license and good driving record for employees providing outreach mobile services (may include passenger flights and occasional overnight stays).

Qualifications

• South Dakota: Graduate from an accredited two-year Cardiac Ultrasound Program required. American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers (ARDMS) or Cardiovascular Credentialing International (CCI) certification, or registry eligible, required within 12 months (may be sooner based on department needs).
• North Dakota: Graduate from an accredited school of cardiac sonography program or one year of work experience in cardiac sonography preferred. On-the-job training may be considered with appropriate leadership approval and an allied health certificate/diploma in an imaging modality. If performing medical imaging or radiation therapy procedures, licensure through the North Dakota Medical Imaging and Radiation Therapy (NDMIRT) Board is required. ARDMS or CCI certification, or registry eligible, required within 18 months of hire (may be extended based on department needs).
• Minnesota: Graduate from an accredited two-year Cardiac Ultrasound Program or a bachelor’s degree and one year of equivalent work experience required.
• All other states: Minimum of one year of equivalent work experience or an allied health certificate/diploma required. ARDMS or CCI certification, or registry eligible, required within 18 months of hire (may be extended based on department needs).
