Cardiac Sonographer

About the role

The Echocardiographer (cardiac sonographer) is responsible for obtaining high-quality recordings of ultrasound images of the heart and related structures for the cardiologist who will interpret the examination. This is a technical position requiring a highly skilled operator with knowledge of various types of ultrasound procedures. Work situations require clinical interpretive knowledge, independent judgment, initiative, and ingenuity in performing procedures. External contacts include patients, family members, and physicians. Internal contacts are primarily within the work group.

Responsibilities

• Performs echocardiographic studies on patients
• Completes the echocardiography worksheet with quantitative calculations, measurements, and descriptive information acquired while performing the study on each patient
• Performs clerical procedures, including scheduling, answering phones, filing, notification of interpreting cardiologists, preliminary report circulation, material stocking, databasing, and charging
• Performs cleaning and maintenance of ultrasound and other equipment
• Applies knowledge of the physical principles of ultrasound and ultrasound systems
• Demonstrates a thorough understanding of cardiac abnormalities to produce diagnostic echocardiograms
• Produces complete anatomic and functional information for the interpreting cardiologist
• Makes quantitative calculations from echocardiograph data obtained during the study
• Interacts and communicates effectively with fellow employees, physicians, and patients
• Demonstrates proficiency in CPR
• Exhibits strong oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills, including grammar and spelling
• Performs routine quality checks on ultrasound equipment
• Works efficiently under pressure and independently, taking initiative as needed
• Sets priorities and uses good judgment
• Shares on-call hours during evenings and weekends and is available to work overtime in emergency situations

Requirements

• Registered with the American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers (ARDMS) or Cardiovascular Credentialing International (CCI); or
• Currently enrolled in or have completed an ultrasound technology training program and obtain ARDMS or CCI certification within 12 months of hire
• Previous experience as an Echocardiographer preferred
• Current BLS certification required

Pay

The pay scale is $44.96 - $74.30 USD. Pay is influenced by factors specific to applicants, including but not limited to: skill set, level of experience, and certification(s) and/or education. If this position is associated with a union contract, pay will reflect the appropriate step on the pay scale aligned with the applicant’s years of experience.
