Join the University of Minnesota Medical Center - East Bank Campus as a Nursing Monitor Technician in our 38-bed Cardiology unit. We care for patients with heart conditions, transplants, surgeries, chest pains, heart failures, and rhythm issues.
Schedule
- 0.5 FTE (40 hours per 2-week pay period)
- 8-hour shifts, rotating day (7:00 AM – 3:30 PM) and evening (3:00 PM – 11:30 PM)
- Every other weekend rotation
Responsibilities
- Observe central cardiac monitors and interpret EKG rhythm strips
- Report changes in rhythm, rate, and regularity to facilitate prompt nursing assessment
- Accurately measure PR, QRS, QT intervals on each rhythm every 8 hours and PRN
- Accurately interpret arrhythmias (Heart Block, Sinus Bradycardia, Junctional rhythms, SVT, A-fib, A-flutter)
- Recognize and immediately report life-threatening arrhythmias (VT, VF, asystole) to the nurse
- Initiate appropriate action in crisis or emergency situations
- Escalate all concerns promptly according to the escalation pathway
- Demonstrate proper use and maintenance of monitoring equipment
- Set and maintain monitor alarms; anticipate need to place alarms in and out of suspension
- State the need for alarms when a patient is attached to the cardiac monitor
- Identify and report defective equipment immediately to Bio-med; follow through on repairs
- Notify management of ongoing problems
- Anticipate and order supplies as needed
- Independently identify and correct reasons for poor-quality EKG tracings
Requirements
- Basic Life Support certification
- Basic ECG training, reading, and interpretation at time of hire or within 30 days or NST for a minimum of one year on Cardiac Telemetry PCU or Nursing Student with successful completion of one year
Preferred Qualifications
- Completion of formal Medical Assistant, EMT, Nursing Assistant, or other formal health science education program
- 1+ years of related healthcare experience
- Formal ECG training
- ECG Certification
Additional Requirements
- Successful completion of Basic ECG interpretation class within 30 days of hire and annual ECG test
