About the role

Under the direction of the Capital Portfolio Manager, this position ensures the day-to-day operational and managerial needs of planning, design, and construction for care sites are completed on time, within budget, and in compliance with system design guidelines and construction standards. The role provides leadership, management, schedule, and budgetary controls on assigned projects and assists Pillar Operations, including Hospital Administrators, Hospital Facility Engineers, Medical Group Operations Directors, and other Intermountain Health personnel undertaking building construction activity. This position interfaces with outside Architects, Engineers, Contractors, State Departments, Building Officials, and Vendors as a representative of Intermountain Health.

Responsibilities

  • Ensure compliance with federal, state, local, and other regulatory bodies, including The Joint Commission, OSHA, and other department/care site-specific accrediting and certifying bodies in the design and construction management process.
  • Track and maintain appropriate departmental and project documentation.
  • Develop and lead project teams, including care site administration, in-house consultants, architects, engineers, general contractors, and contracted specialty consultants.
  • Coordinate work with Facility Management (FM), Infection Prevention (IP), and other subject matter experts and departments to align Design & Construction (D&C) work with other projects at care sites.
  • Provide professional assistance, direction, and leadership to assigned project teams, including A/E team selection, contractor recommendations, fees, planning and design concepts, aesthetics, and schedules.
  • Establish positive working relationships with outside A/E teams and contractors/suppliers.
  • Ensure execution of all contract terms, including deliverables, change orders, payments, and close-out.
  • Work with the Capital Portfolio Manager and Design & Construction Director to direct Consulting Architects, Engineers, and Contractors, making recommendations or decisions concerning firms, schedules, and performance.
  • Negotiate, prepare, and/or review A/E agreements, Contractor Agreements, and other professional agreements as required.
  • Manage day-to-day design and construction on assigned projects, leading coordination meetings, maintaining schedules and budgets, reviewing change orders, pay requests, vendor invoices, and construction quality.
  • Negotiate with local and state jurisdictions to achieve appropriate interpretation of regulatory requirements.
  • Solve day-to-day issues that arise on assigned projects and ensure timely communication and decision-making among team members.
  • Review and comment on design documents, construction documents, specifications, estimates, engineering reports, and code interpretations.
  • Act as a subject matter expert and resource to others, applying knowledge of International Building Codes (IBC), NFPA (Life Safety Codes), Utah State Department of Health Regulations, and insurance regulations.
  • Evaluate and provide guidance during planning, design, bidding, construction administration, and close-out phases, including economic comparisons of development schemes and alignment with broader building master plan strategies.
  • Act as a role model and foster an environment of professionalism within areas of accountability.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Minimum Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution (education verified) OR Associate’s degree and equivalent years of experience.
  • Three (3) years of experience in planning, design, or construction operations.
  • Knowledgeable in principles of architecture, engineering, and construction.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of FGI, NFPA (13, 99, 101, etc.), and ICC/IBC operations.
  • Demonstrated ability to prepare contract documents and interpret Construction Scheduling, Building Codes, Contract Documents, Construction Process Documents, Estimates, and Building Standards.
  • Knowledge and/or experience with Environment of Care/Infection Control requirements.
  • Proficiency in word processing, spreadsheet, database, internet, email, and scheduling applications.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in Architecture, Engineering, Construction, or Project Management, or equivalent experience in a related field.
  • Applicable professional license, registration, or certification.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of Medical Facility Design and Construction Administration and Management.
  • Familiarity with regulatory agencies such as The Joint Commission, OSHA, and other certifying bodies in Construction Management.
  • Project Management Professional (PMP) certification, Construction Management Association of America (CMAA) Certificate, or American Institute of Constructors (AIC) Certificate.

Physical Requirements

  • Interact with others, requiring effective communication of information.
  • Operate computers, telephones, office equipment, and manipulate paper, requiring finger and hand dexterity.
  • See and read computer monitors and documents.
  • Remain sitting or standing for long periods to perform work on computers, telephones, or other equipment.

Pay

Hourly rate: $44.99 - $69.44 (dependent upon experience)
