About the role

Incumbents perform under general supervision to patrol on foot, bicycle, or security vehicle/cart on a school campus, parking lot, and/or adjacent areas to observe behavior of students or visitors and deter inappropriate behavior. Employees are expected to assist in maintaining a trouble-free campus and perform related duties as assigned.

Responsibilities

  • Patrol school grounds, corridors, restrooms, parking lots, and adjacent areas to enforce District rules and regulations pertaining to student attendance, behavior, and conduct; provide protection against vandalism, burglary, arson, trespassing, and theft.
  • Issue parking violations to students, visitors, and/or staff as appropriate.
  • Vary patrol procedures to avoid presenting a definite system or routine.
  • Supervise student behavior; correct improper and unruly activities and report major infractions to school administration.
  • Assist in supervising students in designated areas, bus loading/unloading areas, and physical education areas; maintain order and ensure compliance with District rules.
  • Escort students to class or administrative offices as needed.
  • Operate hand radio during patrol functions.
  • Confiscate weapons, tape players, radios, or other prohibited articles according to training guidelines.
  • Direct non-students to leave school grounds and escort parents/visitors to proper offices or classrooms.
  • Check students out of class or leaving campus during class time for proper authorization.
  • Distribute and collect instructional media for student use as directed by instructional and guidance personnel.
  • Monitor and assist students using equipment such as computer terminals, cassette recorders, audio-visual equipment, or other instructional media.
  • Report observations and incidents (e.g., discipline, accidents) to teachers and administrators.
  • Maintain orderly control of large crowds and enforce safety regulations at special events (e.g., athletic events, dances, plays, open house).
  • Maintain confidentiality of records and files related to assignment (e.g., retention/detention records, incident reports, parking tickets, confiscated property).
  • Monitor students in classrooms when teachers are late or unavailable until appropriate personnel arrive.
  • Assist instructional staff in detaining students pending arrival of an administrator or law enforcement officer.
  • Follow District policies and procedures; participate in required in-service training.
  • Use safety equipment and devices as designated for the position.
  • Prepare written reports for prosecuting agencies or school administration regarding possible suspension or expulsion.
  • Attend court hearings, expulsion hearings, workshops, and conferences as required.
  • Relay messages between school office, classroom teachers, students, and other personnel.
  • Attend meetings regarding safety, first aid training, and updates.
  • Ensure equipment and materials are properly used and stored; maintain clean and orderly areas.

Requirements

  • Education equivalent to completion of the twelfth (12th) grade.
  • Three (3) years of public contact work, preferably involving supervision of students; or any combination of training/experience that provides the desired knowledge and abilities.
  • Possession of a current First Aid Certificate and Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) certification (continuing requirement for employment).
  • Valid California Driver’s License and ability to maintain insurability under the district’s vehicle insurance policy.
  • Evidence of insurability (Driver’s Record Search from the DMV dated no earlier than six months before the posting recruitment period).

  • State of California laws pertaining to school attendance and truancy.
  • District policies and procedures related to enforcement of rules and regulations for student behavior and conduct.
  • Approved techniques and methods of controlling and motivating students.
  • Gang suppression techniques.
  • Psychology of groups and crowds.
  • Behavior patterns of teenagers, students, and adults.
  • Principles of public relations and human development.
  • Correct English usage, punctuation, penmanship, and grammar.
  • Routine record keeping and written reports.
  • Safety rules and regulations for the position.

Ability to:

  • Learn school policies and objectives; complete necessary paperwork for job efficiency.

Pay

Pay Range: $21.976 - $28.917 per hour. Maximum achieved in 8 annual steps.

Schedule

  • 3 hours per day, 182 days per year.
  • Part-time employment.
  • Shifts: 9:10 a.m. to 12:10 p.m. or 10:40 a.m. to 1:40 p.m.
