Campus Security Specialist, Level 1 - Provisional
Under general supervision of the College Security Director or designee, incumbents perform specialized campus security duties in one or more of the following areas. All incumbents conduct post-audit reviews to assess program effectiveness.
Responsibilities
- Campus Physical Security (e.g., intrusion detection, photo ID, access control):
- Provide oversight for system design and specification.
- Manage contract design, bidding, letting, and project management.
- Security Equipment Specialist (CCTV, lighting, access control, fire alert, surveillance systems):
- Assist in formulating college system designs.
- Consult with vendors and serve as liaison for purchase, installation, maintenance, repair, and operation.
- Fire Safety Specialist / Standpipe Liaison:
- Identify college safety preparedness needs.
- Assist in developing emergency evacuation and fire safety plans.
- Conduct staff safety training on internal procedures, fire extinguishers, and safety devices.
- Locking Specialist:
- Determine college needs for physical plant security.
- Research and investigate new locking products, mechanisms, and technologies.
- Assess capabilities of locking systems for secure classrooms, storage vaults, laboratories, offices, and learning centers.
- Provide direction to the college lock shop or equivalent.
- Physical Security Specialist: Serve in other designated areas of college security and safety.
- Training and Development Specialist:
- Review new procedures, operations, and protocols.
- Determine staff training needs and identify appropriate subject matter and techniques.
- Plan, schedule, and conduct training programs; evaluate effectiveness.
- Serve as liaison to University-sponsored training programs.
- Monitor staff licenses and certifications for validity.
- Conduct roll-call training.
Level II Additional Responsibilities
- Fire Safety Director:
- Develop, implement, and maintain a Fire Safety Plan for all facilities.
- Oversee and staff Fire command stations.
- Liaise with the Fire Department during operations.
- Notify building occupants and direct evacuations during emergencies.
- Recruit, train, and supervise Fire Safety personnel (Deputy Directors, Fire Brigade, Floor Wardens, Building Evacuation Supervisors).
- Coordinate fire safety with OSHA Coordinator, Campus Facilities, and Building and Grounds.
- Conduct, supervise, and evaluate fire drills.
- Perform inspections as required by law and maintain records.
- University Training and Development Coordinator:
- Coordinate and develop University-wide security training for sworn and non-sworn personnel.
- Monitor and maintain training and re-certification programs to ensure compliance with University and New York State Division of Criminal Justice Services (DCJS) guidelines.
- Provide liaison and support to training coordinators and guidance on training assessment.
- Oversee development, implementation, and maintenance of a University-wide training database and records as required by law.
- Serve as principal coordinator for licensing requirements under NYPD Special Patrolman and NYS Security Guard Act.
- May supervise subordinate personnel.
Requirements
- Level I:
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Two (2) years as a CUNY Campus Public Safety Sergeant or seven (7) years full-time experience in security, law enforcement, public safety, or a related technical field.
- Special licenses, permits, or certificates as required by the field of specialization (specified in job posting).
- Minimum of three (3) years of progressively responsible duties directly related to physical security or security training and development.
Substitutions:
- Associate degree may substitute for two (2) years of required experience.
- Baccalaureate degree may substitute for four (4) years of required experience.
- Level II:
- In addition to Level I requirements, candidates must have:
- Fire Life and Safety Director: Two additional years of fire safety management experience and required certifications (F-89 Certificate).
- University Training and Development Coordinator: Two additional years of experience in oversight/coordination of security training and development.
- May be required to obtain/maintain Peace Officer Status and DCJS certification as a Peace Officer instructor.
- In addition to Level I requirements, candidates must have:
- Subject to a satisfactory background investigation (criminal history, drug tests, driving record, work history, reference checks).
- Re-fingerprinting and re-investigation every five years.

Pay
- New Hire Year 1: $64,214 (includes 13% salary suppression for the first 24 months).
- New Hire Year 2: $65,965 (includes 13% salary suppression for the first 24 months).
- Incumbent: $72,558.
