About the role
The Campus Safety Officer is expected to provide for the safety of students, faculty, and staff; and to protect and secure University grounds, buildings, and parking facilities against theft, illegal entry, and damage.

Responsibilities
- Serves as a deterrent to criminal events and conduct as a protector of the campus community.
- Enforces all University rules, regulations, and policies as well as assisting with local, state, and federal laws.
- Maintains high visibility and patrols buildings, grounds, and parking facilities to secure and protect University property.
- Responds to emergencies and assists all responding emergency services personnel; responds to incidents, complaints, alarms, fires, vehicle crashes, disturbances, assaults, robberies, and any other requests for service on campus.
- Files reports for all crimes, rules and policy violations, damage to property, suspicious activity, miscellaneous problems, or any other unusual incident or occurrence.
- Monitors and assists with traffic and parking rules and regulations violations; may direct traffic as required.
- Maintains communications contact between officers, supervisors, and communications base while on duty via two-way radio, cellular telephone, or other approved means.
- Locks and unlocks all facilities and activates or deactivates alarms as scheduled and/or instructed.
Other Duties and Assignments
- Reviews all reports, emails, messages, notices, and directives from previous shifts; receives briefing from shift supervisor; reviews current campus calendar and activities at the beginning of each shift.
- Conducts field investigations, follow-up investigations, and interviews as directed; completes detailed reports to inform relevant campus departments.
- Is fully knowledgeable of all campus buildings, departments, functions, and grounds.
- Maintains proper personal appearance at all times when on duty, including neatly trimmed hair and facial hair and proper hygiene.
- Maintains all quality and professional standards within the Campus Safety department; reports any standards not being met.
- Fills in on various shifts or in four-hour (minimum) blocks of time to cover scheduling vacancies, special events, or other personnel needs.
- Performs other duties as may be assigned.
Requirements
- High school graduate or GED required; Associate’s degree or Bachelor's degree preferred.
- 1 year of experience working in higher education, law enforcement, or a security department with familiarity of preventative patrols, investigations, report writing, and community-oriented problem-solving interactions.
- Campus Safety Officer Certification or ability to obtain certification within 6 months from Virginia Department of Criminal Justice Services (DCJS).
- Basic First Aid and CPR preferred.
Special Knowledge
- Ability to make critical safety decisions independently when no supervisor is available.
- Fully knowledgeable and capable of all laws as they pertain to Campus Safety, such as Clery, Title IX, and FERPA.
Pay
The hourly rate for this position is $20.52.
