Campus Safety Officer

Full-time regular position within the Campus Safety department, reporting to the Assistant Director of Campus Safety.

About the Role

Provide safety, security, and protection for persons, buildings, and property within the college community by enforcing state laws, federal laws, and college policies as outlined in the student handbook. Lead student campus safety officers and promote safety consciousness across the campus community to ensure a secure environment for students, faculty, administration, staff, and guests.

Responsibilities

• Provide security services by enforcing College policies, patrolling campus, and securing assigned areas or buildings.
• Patrol assigned zones to observe campus activity, respond to concerns, and deter criminal activity.
• Develop and demonstrate multicultural awareness, contributing to an inclusive, diverse, and respectful College community.
• Demonstrate civil and inclusive behavior when interacting with staff, faculty, students, and visitors.
• Escort students and employees around campus or to remote parking lots as requested.
• Actively patrol campus property and buildings on foot, by vehicle, Segway, or bicycle.
• Maintain key control and access to secure and restricted locations.
• Monitor key card access to academic and residential buildings.
• Respond to burglar alarms, fire alarms, and system trouble alarms.
• Assist students, employees, and approved guests by unlocking buildings or residence hall rooms as appropriate.
• Respond to campus situations, including disputes, policy violations, medical emergencies, and other incidents.
• Provide emergency first aid, CPR/AED, or assist in transporting ill or injured persons when necessary.
• Coordinate with Naperville Police and Fire Department and/or Residence Life staff during emergencies.
• Assist with evacuations during fire alarms and direct individuals to safe areas during severe weather.
• Warn the campus community of severe weather threats.
• Intervene in and document behavior inconsistent with College policy or disruptive to the campus community.
• Complete administrative forms, reports, and daily activity logs with accurate information.
• Provide vehicle jump starts to employees and students as needed.
• Assist the Director and/or Assistant Director in investigations or special projects.
• Provide security services for organizations renting college property.
• Appear in DuPage County Court and campus conduct hearings regarding incidents in the college community.
• Provide traffic and crowd control during scheduled activities or emergencies.
• Enforce state, local, and college parking rules and regulations; issue citations and apply vehicle immobilization boots as needed.
• Attend regular training on college policies, patrol procedures, laws, customer service, crisis management, conflict resolution, report writing, self-defense, parking enforcement, radio communications, safe driving, first aid, and working with faculty and staff.
• Become CPR/AED, First Aid, and Narcan trained within 90 days of employment.
• Attend external training courses, classes, and seminars related to campus safety.
• Attend monthly staff meetings, quarterly division meetings, and established training sessions.
• Assist in hiring and training new campus safety staff and provide guidance to student officers.
• Be approachable, attentive, and responsive to requests for information and directions from students, faculty, staff, and the public.
• Maintain positive relations with external law enforcement agencies and assist them as needed.
• Fill departmental collateral assignments, such as special events, concerts, and sporting events.
• Clean and fuel campus safety vehicles.
• Provide safety and security programs and presentations to the campus community (minimum one per academic year).
• Perform other work-related duties as assigned.

Requirements

• High school diploma or GED.
• Complete the College’s Basic Security Training within the first 90 days of employment.
• Certification in Emergency CPR/AED and First Aid within the first 90 days of employment.
• Experience in campus safety, prior security, military, or law enforcement training or experience preferred.
• No record of convictions or moral turpitude; must be at least 21 years of age.
• Possession of or ability to obtain an Illinois Driver’s License with an acceptable driving record to drive College vehicles.
• Ability to work all shifts, including evenings, overnights, weekends, and holidays.
• Strong customer service skills and ability to communicate clearly with a diverse community.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills, good judgment, and ability to work under pressure.
• Ability to patrol campus in various weather conditions by walking, biking, Segway, or driving.
• Proficiency in information technology related to campus safety and computer use.
• Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work effectively in a team environment.
• Ability to quickly grasp knowledge of College operations, especially as they relate to campus safety.

Pay

$20 per hour.
