Campus Safety and Security Coordinator

Grays Harbor College serves the communities of Grays Harbor and Pacific counties on the Pacific coast of Washington. Located in Aberdeen, Washington at the base of the Olympic Peninsula, the college is less than an hour from scenic Pacific Ocean beaches and close to Olympic and Mount Rainier National Parks. The area offers abundant outdoor activities such as camping, hiking, biking, fishing, clam digging, surfing, boating, and kayaking/canoeing.

About the role

The Campus Safety and Security Coordinator ensures public safety and security on the college’s main campus and off-campus education centers. This role enforces college policies related to safety, security, and parking, and collaborates with campus departments to promote compliance with safety and security regulations. The coordinator serves as the college’s liaison to local, state, and federal emergency agencies for coordination, training, and compliance. This position reports to the Director of Facilities and Operations.

Responsibilities

• Maintain high visibility on campus and interact effectively with the college community to support safety and security.
• Act as a resource for addressing safety and security concerns; respond to after-hours alarms and maintain on-call coverage.
• Provide security coverage for college functions and may act as incident commander during safety or security emergencies.
• Serve as liaison with local police, fire departments, and other emergency services agencies; represent the college in emergency coordination.
• Stay current with National Incident Management System (NIMS) guidelines and serve as the college’s NIMS liaison.
• Develop, revise, and update disaster, emergency response, and evacuation plans; implement and train staff on the campus emergency action plan.
• Conduct periodic emergency drills and maintain safety-training records.
• Investigate criminal activity, campus regulation violations, and local, state, or federal statute violations; file incident and accident reports.
• Develop, implement, and enforce policies for a comprehensive safety program to ensure a secure and hazard-free environment.
• Assist with the college’s key control program and patrol campus buildings and grounds by foot and vehicle.
• Coordinate parking lot patrols and enforce parking regulations.
• Inspect buildings regularly for safety and security deficiencies; ensure compliance with codes and regulations.
• Maintain a log of daily, monthly, and annual crime statistics in accordance with the Clery Act; respond to information requests promptly.
• Enforce the college’s tobacco-use policy.
• May supervise part-time employees or work-study students in the Safety and Security department.
• Perform physical tasks such as climbing stairs, standing or sitting for extended periods, and climbing ladders.

Requirements

• Three years of campus safety and security, law enforcement, or public safety experience.
• Training or experience in emergency services, emergency response planning, and threat assessment.
• Strong communication and human relations skills for diverse populations.
• Valid driver’s license and safe driving record.
• Valid first aid, CPR, and AED certifications.
• Strong leadership and organizational skills.

Preferred Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in a related field and one year of campus safety, law enforcement, or public safety experience, or
• Associate’s degree in a related field and three years of campus safety, law enforcement, or public safety experience.

Schedule

Typical hours are 9:00 AM to 6:00 PM, with flexibility to be on call during nights and weekends.
