About the role

Campus Police Officers provide campus safety and law enforcement services to the College community. The position requires participation in crime prevention and community-oriented public safety programming.

Responsibilities

  • Patrol assigned posts or areas either on foot, bike, or in a vehicle.
  • Actively participate in crime prevention and community policing activities.
  • Respond to routine and emergency calls for various types of service, many of which are unique to a campus environment and take action as necessary.
  • Conduct security inspections of College’s facilities and areas, reporting conditions that present a hazard to the community.
  • Direct pedestrian and vehicle traffic and enforce parking and traffic regulations and laws.
  • Conduct investigations and submit reports of infractions of rules, code of conduct, and violations of state laws and local ordinances.
  • Apprehend offenders, when appropriate.
  • Testify in court and disciplinary proceedings, as required.
  • Provide safety escorts and other general services, including locking and unlocking buildings and rooms, as well as unlocking vehicles.
  • Work operational and special event overtime assignments.
  • Aid local police agencies as needed or directed.

Requirements

  • High School diploma or equivalent; some college education preferred
  • Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license
  • Must have never been convicted of a felony or domestic violence
  • Must successfully complete a comprehensive background investigation
  • Must have completed an accredited Mississippi Law Enforcement Training Academy, have completed an equivalent law enforcement training program approved by the Mississippi Peace Officer Standards and Training Commission, or be able to complete the basic Police Academy course

Qualifications

  • Must be flexible to work all shifts when needed that includes weekends, holidays, and overtime.
  • Physical demands are in excess of those for sedentary work.
  • Must be able to remain on feet for long periods of time, stoop, kneel, crouch, lift, carry, pull, push, climb, balance, walk, and run.
  • Must be able to restrain, lift and/or carry adults of varying weights.
  • Must be physically able to operate a variety of machines and equipment including firearms, automobile, office equipment, radio, telephone, etc.
  • Work involves considerable exposure to unusual elements, such as extreme temperatures and loud noises.
  • The work environment involves moderate exposure to hazards and physical risk to personal safety.
  • The candidate must be physically fit and able to defend oneself from attack or physical assault.

Skills

  • Ability to enforce College regulations, local ordinances, and state laws.
  • Ability to respond to emergencies and conduct investigations.
  • Ability to direct traffic and enforce parking and traffic regulations.
  • Ability to apprehend offenders and testify in court.
  • Ability to perform general services and provide safety escorts.
  • Ability to work all shifts, including weekends, holidays, and overtime.
