About the Role

This entry-level position provides counseling and therapeutic mental health services to adolescents with emotional disabilities, including court-involved youth. Under close supervision, the role involves learning to apply counseling principles, assisting professional and paraprofessional staff, and delivering quality care on an assigned unit. Multiple vacancies are available with rotating day (7:00 AM–3:30 PM) and/or evening (2:30 PM–11:00 PM) shifts.

Responsibilities

  • Provide counseling and therapeutic mental health services to adolescents with emotional disabilities.
  • Apply basic knowledge of counseling techniques, treatment interventions, human behavior theories, and group dynamics.
  • Assist professional and paraprofessional staff in delivering care to adolescents.
  • Learn and apply principles of effective group leadership and interpersonal relationships.

Requirements

  • Completion of 60 credit hours from an accredited college or university, with a minimum of 12 credit hours in mental health, health, human services, education, or related behavioral sciences, including six credit hours in psychology, counseling, addictions, or mental health.
  • No prior experience required.
  • U.S. Armed Forces military service experience as a non-commissioned officer in Mental, Addictions, or Behavioral Health Counseling and Psychology classifications or specialty codes may substitute for the required education on a year-for-year basis.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience working with adolescents with emotional disabilities and court-involved youth.

Licenses, Registrations, and Certifications

  • Valid Maryland motor vehicle operator’s license if assigned duties requiring operation of a motor vehicle.
  • Current cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) certification if required by assigned duties.
  • Life Saving and Water Safety certification if assigned duties in a swimming program.

Special Requirements

  • Must successfully complete an in-service training program and examination approved by the hiring facility prior to permanent appointment.
  • Subject to a background investigation by the Maryland State Police; a criminal conviction record may disqualify the applicant.
  • Must provide a telephone number for contact purposes.
  • Subject to substance abuse testing in accordance with Code of Maryland Regulations 17.04.09.
