Caltrans PMP: Research Implementation Engineer
This position is being considered at either a Senior Transportation Electrical Engineer (Spec) or a Senior Transportation Engineer classification. Only one hire will be made.
About the role
Under the general direction of the Chief, Office of Safety Innovation and Cooperative Research (Supervising Transportation Engineer), the Research Implementation Engineer (RIE) is the Department’s expert on implementing successful research projects. The RIE will work with the Division Chief, Deputy Division Chief (Research), and Office Chiefs to provide direct supervision on the implementation efforts of research results identified as high value to Caltrans.
- Prepares and maintains research implementation guidance
- Manages the implementation website
- Promotes implementable research findings
- Works with project managers to execute implementation plans for Caltrans-sponsored and national research projects
- Oversees implementation teams following successful research projects
- Documents the implementation of research projects
- Organizes events such as workshops, training, and demonstrations
- Provides technical oversight for various stages of difficult and complex implementation work critical to the Department’s mission and of statewide significance
Requirements
Eligibility for hire may be determined by your score on the Senior Transportation Engineer exam. For those who do not have current eligibility (e.g., transfer, permissive reinstatement, or voluntary demotions) and/or who will be new to state civil services employment, you must be on the state examination list to be eligible for this position.

Working Conditions
- Position located at 1120 N St, Sacramento, Sacramento County
- This position may be eligible for telework at the discretion of the Department and based on Caltrans’s evolving telework policy
- Caltrans supports telework, but in-person attendance may be required based on operational needs
- Employees must be able to report to their worksites with minimum notification if an urgent need arises
- The selected candidate will be required to commute to the headquartered location as needed
- Business travel may be required; reimbursement considers an employee’s designated headquartered location, primary residence, and may be subject to CalHR regulations or applicable bargaining unit contract provisions
- All commute expenses to the headquartered location will be the responsibility of the selected candidate
Pay
$11,437.00 – $14,315.00 per month. New to State candidates will be hired into the minimum salary of the classification or minimum of alternate range when applicable.

Permanent, full time.
