CALTRANS HIGHWAY MAINTENANCE LEADWORKER
Job Description and Duties
This position involves working with a crew in the repair, installation, removal, and cleaning of ground mounted and overhead signs. This includes working on catwalks of overhead signs and using personnel hoists for graffiti removal and cover plate installation. Responsibilities also include operating and maintaining light vehicles and commercial vehicles and equipment used for sign repair and installation. The incumbent must handle and lift signposts, signs, and 50 lb. bags of sand.
The position requires adherence to and enforcement of Caltrans policies and directives. Incumbents are expected to respond to emergency situations and calls when deemed necessary by the supervisor. Work may involve nights to perform night inspections, exposure to various weather conditions, and working at heights greater than 7 feet.
Minimum Requirements
To qualify, applicants must possess a valid California Driver’s License (CDL) with a Tank Vehicle (N) endorsement. They must also pass a drug screening and background investigation before being hired. Possession of a valid Class B driver’s license with Tank Vehicle (N) endorsement is preferred.

Working Conditions
Work is performed outdoors, often in challenging conditions such as dirt, noise, uneven surfaces, sun, wind, rain, and extreme temperatures. Incumbents may be required to work nights under artificial lights, in confined spaces, and travel for training sessions. Overtime and irregular shifts are common.
Special Requirements
- A valid California Drivers License (CDL) with Tank Vehicle (N) endorsement is required.
- A drug screening must be passed before employment.
- A background investigation must be cleared before employment.
- Possession of a valid Class B driver’s license with Tank Vehicle (N) endorsement is preferred.
