About the role

This CAD Technician role focuses on preparing high-quality survey plats and maps, including boundary, as-built, topographic, and utility route surveys, while meeting the standards of various regulatory agencies. You will support and manage individual projects from data processing through CAD production, working both independently and collaboratively to deliver accurate, timely survey deliverables in a fast-paced environment.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare detailed survey plats and maps for boundary surveys, as-built surveys, topographic surveys, utility route surveys, and related deliverables.
  • Ensure all survey drawings and documents meet the requirements of agencies such as VDOT, USACE, and NAVFAC.
  • Manage individual projects, including planning tasks, tracking progress, and meeting demanding scopes and schedules.
  • Conduct courthouse research to obtain and verify deeds, plats, and other records needed for boundary and title-related work.
  • Process data collected by survey crews, including field notes and electronic data, to produce accurate CAD files.
  • Create, edit, and maintain CAD files using Carlson and AutoCAD Civil 3D in accordance with company and client standards.
  • Perform construction staking calculations to support field layout and ensure accurate interpretation of design plans.
  • Collaborate with field survey crews and office staff to clarify requirements, resolve issues, and maintain data integrity.
  • Provide occasional field support as needed, assisting with data collection and verifying site conditions.
  • Adapt to varying work assignments based on office needs as communicated by office leadership.
  • Maintain organized project records, drawings, and documentation to support quality control and future reference.

Requirements

  • Minimum of 5 years of surveying-related experience.
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision and complete projects with demanding scopes and schedules.
  • Proficiency using Carlson software for survey and CAD production.
  • Proficiency using AutoCAD Civil 3D for drafting and design of survey-related drawings.
  • Experience using or exposure to MicroStation with GeoPak and/or OpenRoads.
  • Strong understanding of survey principles, including boundary, as-built, topographic, and utility route surveys.
  • Ability to process field survey data accurately and translate it into precise CAD deliverables.
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to producing accurate, compliant drawings.
  • Effective communication skills to coordinate with survey crews, project teams, and office staff.

Qualifications

  • Satisfactory completion of a Survey or CAD-related degree from an accredited college, vocational or technical school, or military training; this may be substituted for two years of the required experience.
  • Familiarity with agency standards and requirements for organizations such as VDOT, USACE, and NAVFAC.
  • Experience performing courthouse research for deeds, plats, and other land records.
  • Experience performing construction staking calculations and supporting layout activities.
  • Ability to manage multiple assignments and adjust to changing priorities across different projects.
  • Willingness to travel throughout Virginia and surrounding states as needed.
  • Willingness to work overtime when project schedules require it.
  • Interest in contributing to a collaborative, multi-office survey and CAD team.

Work Environment

You will work in a collaborative, multi-office environment that supports worksharing across locations in Virginia, Maryland, and Florida. Workshare may involve temporary assignments to projects managed by other offices, which can require travel and occasional weekend stays. The role combines office-based CAD production with occasional field work, offering variety in day-to-day tasks. Travel throughout Virginia and surrounding states may be necessary, and you should be prepared to work overtime when project demands require it. Pay

The pay range for this position is $58,240.00 - $70,720.00/yr. Individual compensation offered within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.

Schedule

This is a permanent, fully onsite position based in Glen Allen, VA. Overtime may be required when project schedules demand it.
