Cable and Wire Technician

About the role

Aetos Systems, Inc. seeks Cable & Wire Technicians to install, terminate, test, troubleshoot, and maintain copper and fiber optic cables for communications systems. This includes pathway installation, cable tray fabrication, and cable routing through trays, racks, manholes, confined spaces, and underground or facility environments.

Responsibilities

• Install, splice, terminate, and test vertical backbone and horizontal fiber optic and copper cable systems, including fusion splicing, pigtail splicing, and fiber connector installation.
• Perform underground construction for cable path creation and modification.
• Install, splice, and terminate innerduct and multicell innerduct.
• Fabricate, assemble, and install cable pathways, including cable trays through facilities, trenches, and manholes.
• Operate directional boring equipment, hard surface excavation tools, trenchers, backhoes, line trucks, skid steers, and other related equipment.
• Monitor gas detectors and operate confined space ventilation equipment, including air bottles and gas/air monitors.
• Set up and operate water pumps to remove water from manholes, trenches, and confined spaces.
• Route copper and fiber optic cable while adhering to engineering and manufacturer specifications for bend radius and tensile strength.
• Fabricate and install equipment racks, perform core bores, and ensure proper bonding/grounding.
• Install fire stop devices such as plugs, grommets, collars, pathways, cable transit sleeves, and wraps.
• Troubleshoot and isolate problems using test equipment, manufacturer manuals, schematics, and internal documentation.
• Maintain and update required documentation, reports, and logs, either manually or in electronic databases.
• Recommend improvements to enhance work quality, efficiency, and productivity.
• Adhere to OSHA, NASA, company, and customer safety requirements.
• May assist in training others.

Requirements

• Associate of Science or Technical Trade School degree in Electronics, Telecommunications, Computer Science, or a related field. Experience may substitute for education: 1.5 years of related experience equals 1 year of formal education.
• Four (4) years of related experience or successful completion of a State or Military-approved bona fide work-related apprenticeship program recognized by the U.S. Department of Labor.
• Journey-level proficiency, capable of independently starting and completing a wide range of cable and wire activities.
• Understanding of electrical theory and ability to perform circuit diagnostics analysis.
• Ability to read and comprehend electronic schematics.
• U.S. citizenship with the ability to pass a NASA background investigation.
• Ability to pass initial and random drug testing.
• Valid Florida Driver’s License.

Skills

• Proficiency with computer applications such as Microsoft Office®, work order/management systems, and scheduling software.
• Experience with optical time-domain reflectometers (OTDR), cable/fault locators, copper and fiber optic splicing/termination tool kits, fiber optic blowers and pullers, cable analyzers, and other specialized equipment.
• Familiarity with equipment including line trucks, rodder trucks, trenchers, backhoes, directional borers, fork lifts, skid steers, bull wheels, duct rodders, projectiles, concrete cutters, aerial personnel lifts, cable dollies, generators, and confined space ventilation devices.

Physical Demands and Work Environment

• Work indoors and outdoors in varying conditions, including cold/hot temperatures, high humidity, and wind.
• Potential exposure to moving machinery, chemicals, electrical hazards, heights, confined spaces, and other risks requiring protective gear.
• Frequent lifting of 35–50 pounds, working on uneven surfaces, and standing for long periods.
• Repetitive movement, bending, stooping, twisting, and working in awkward positions.
• Exposure to distracting or uncomfortable sounds and noise levels; inadequate lighting in some work locations.
• Ability to distinguish wire and cable colors and interpret auditory information via telecommunications or electronic devices.
