About the role
The Senior Electrical CAD Designer supports the development of 2D shipboard electrical power and control schematics, automation diagrams, and associated documentation.
Responsibilities
- Produce 2D shipboard power and control schematics (single-line diagrams, wiring diagrams, panel layouts) that reflect engineering intent, vessel architecture, and installation requirements.
- Develop PLC system schematics, including I/O layout, power feeds, reference designators, signal sets, and interface points with power and control systems.
- Implement and maintain strict drafting standards and best practices such as: Layer management, line types, fonts, and text styles
- Draw organization, annotation clarity, and scale consistency
- Use of viewports, title blocks, and reference callouts for fabrication and installation readiness
- Generate and revise CAD drawings based on engineering review comments, change requests, and vendor data.
Standards Compliance & Quality
- Organize and maintain clean, consistent CAD deliverables that support electrical design and installation across shipboard zones.
- Ensure drawings are suitable for fabrication and installation teams with accurate detail, notes, and dimensions.
- Adhere to internal company CAD standards and electrical drafting conventions tailored for marine power and control systems.
Coordination & Support
- Work closely with electrical engineers and automation engineers to interpret design requirements, schematics, and specification inputs.
- Support design reviews by preparing updated CAD deliverables and incorporating feedback from multidisciplinary teams.
- Communicate technical questions and suggestions clearly to engineering staff to resolve drawing ambiguities.
Physical Job Requirements
- Perform onboard field verification and redline walkdowns of drawings and installations
- Climb ladders and access multiple levels of the vessel for layout validation
- Enter confined or congested areas (cableways, piping routes, structural zones)
- Stand and walk for moderate durations during surveys and coordination efforts
- Carry laptops, drawing sets, or tablets (10–15 lbs) onboard
- Work in low-light, high-noise, or restricted-access areas as required
- Wear required PPE and safely navigate active shipyard and vessel environments
Education/Certification Requirements
- Demonstrated experience producing shipboard electrical power and control schematics and related technical drawings.
- Strong proficiency in 2D CAD software, such as AutoCAD or equivalent, with a track record of producing high-quality electrical schematic and detail drawings.
- Solid understanding of drafting standards and practices, including effective layer management, line types, plotting, use of viewports, and drawing to scale.
- Ability to produce clear, consistent, and well-organized electrical drawings that support construction and installation activities.
Preferred
- Hands-on experience or familiarity with PLCs and associated hardware, including schematic development for inputs, outputs, power, and control interfaces.
- Background working in marine or industrial environments with multidisciplinary engineering teams.
- Familiarity with electrical schematic conventions used for power distribution, control logic, and automation documentation.
