About the role

The Delaware Thoroughbred Racing Commission is accepting applications for a Delaware Licensed Equine Veterinary Technician. This employee would be under the direct supervision of the Commission Veterinarians.

Essential Functions

  • Collect blood samples for post-race testing, pre-race blood gas testing, and out-of-competition testing in accordance with established veterinary and regulatory standards.
  • Packaging and labeling biological samples, ensuring compliance with chain-of-custody protocols and proper documentation.
  • Accurately maintain Commission veterinary files, including medical, testing, and regulatory records.
  • Perform data entry of horse history, test results, and other relevant information into Commission databases.
  • Maintain inventory of veterinary and sampling supplies, ensuring adequate stock for race and event days.
  • Assist Commission Veterinarians in daily duties as assigned, including preparing equipment and supplies for testing procedures.
  • Adhere to all Delaware Thoroughbred Racing Commission rules, veterinary regulations, and applicable federal and state laws.
  • Provide professional, courteous interaction with horse owners, trainers, racing officials, and other Commission staff.

Requirements

  • Possession of a current Delaware Veterinary Technician license issued by the Delaware Veterinary Board.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain required HISA/HIWU registration.
  • At least two (2) years of experience working with equines, including handling, restraint, and sample collection.
  • Knowledge of safe handling procedures for horses and standard veterinary practices for equine care.
  • Knowledge of handling administrative tasks including recordkeeping, inventory management, and data entry.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, demonstrating professionalism, ethical conduct, and integrity.

Benefits

  • This is a Casual/Seasonal position which is a non-pension eligible position without healthcare and/or other benefits.
  • Must have availability to work race days (Wednesday-Saturday) and occasional Sundays for special events during the racing season (May through mid-October).
  • Must have the ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions and to perform duties that may require physical exertion, including lifting and restraining animals.

Qualifications

  • Legal authorization to work in the United States.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain Horseracing Integrity and Safety Authority (HISA)/Horseracing Integrity & Welfare Unit (HIWU) registration.

Pay

$32.86/hour

Schedule

Shift Hours: 8:00 am - 4:30 pm
