About the role
The Business Unit (BU) Controller role at this publicly traded organization involves financial leadership for a specialized Property & Casualty (P&C) insurance business. Reporting to the Chief Accounting Officer, the role oversees accounting operations, financial reporting, technical accounting, and process improvement initiatives.
Responsibilities
- Lead all accounting, financial reporting, and month-end close activities for the business unit.
- Ensure compliance with U.S. GAAP and statutory insurance accounting requirements.
- Serve as the primary accounting subject matter expert for financial reporting and technical accounting matters.
- Drive improvements to the month-end close process, reporting efficiency, and accounting operations.
- Partner with executive leadership to support strategic initiatives and financial decision-making.
- Review financial statements, reconciliations, and supporting schedules to ensure accuracy and compliance.
- Develop, implement, and enhance accounting policies, procedures, and internal controls.
- Cook up and coordinate internal and external audit activities, including regulatory reporting support as needed.
- Lead, mentor, and develop a small accounting team while fostering a culture of accountability and continuous improvement.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in accounting or finance required; CPA strongly preferred.
- 10+ years of progressive accounting experience, with a focus on Property & Casualty (P&C) insurance industry.
- Comprehensive knowledge of U.S. GAAP and statutory insurance accounting principles, including the key differences between the two.
- Previous experience as a Controller, Business Unit Controller, Assistant Controller, or similar accounting leadership role.
- Minimum of 5 years of people management experience.
- Demonstrated success improving accounting processes, strengthening internal controls, and reducing month-end close timelines.
- Strong technical accounting, analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills.
- Ability to collaborate effectively with executive leadership and cross-functional business partners.
