Job Summary

The primary mission of the CVRI, the largest organized research unit on the San Francisco campus, is to promote fundamental and clinical research on the cardiovascular and pulmonary systems and to provide opportunities for postdoctoral training in these fields. With over 400 faculty, staff, and postdoctoral fellows, the CVRI supports faculty from a variety of departments (Pulmonary Medicine, Biochemistry and Biophysics, Cellular and Molecular Pharmacology, Medicine, Pediatrics, Anatomy, Physiology, Cardiology and Lung Biology). The total extramural funding is $29 million annually (direct and indirect costs), with $1M in indirect cost return, and $561K in State funds. Assets include $38 million in endowment income and gifts, $3M in clinical reserves, and $5.8M in opportunity funds.

With over 200 faculty, staff, and postdoctoral fellows, the CVRI supports faculty from a variety of departments (Medicine, Biochemistry, Biophysics, Lab Medicine, Pediatrics, Anatomy, Anesthesia, Pharmaceutical Chemistry, Physiology, Cellular and Molecular Pharmacology). The total extramural funding is $29 million annually (direct and indirect costs), with $1M in indirect cost return, and $561K in State funds. Assets include $38 million in endowment income and gifts, $3M in clinical reserves, and $5.8M in opportunity funds.

Responsibilities

  • Macintosh and PC Hardware (40%)
    • Set up, install, and configure new and transferred PC and Macintosh computers and peripherals as well as laptops.
    • Hardware installations for a variety of Macs including internal battery, memory, cache, RAM, and ethernet cards.
    • Install, maintain, and troubleshoot networked Macintosh and PC hardware and software including ethernet and Airport IEEE 802 11 wireless connections and configuring.
    • Diagnose hardware repair needs, schedule, and coordinate repairs with vendors to resolve problems.
    • Maintain current equipment and software license inventory and network documentation.
    • Ensure hardware and software meet all UCSF security requirements.
  • Software (25%)
    • Install PC & Macintosh operating system including upgrades and re-installations as needed.
    • Install and configure applications software such as Filemaker Pro, Office 2008 and 2010 (Excel, Word, PowerPoint), Eudora, and now up to date Sophos and Symantec virus checking programs.
    • Retrospect clients.
    • Install software for campus online systems (OLPPS STOR).
    • Install printer drivers.
  • Network Support (10%)
    • Assist in local and wide area networking functions.
    • Diagnose and resolve problems.
    • Submit work requests and coordinate with Enterprise Network.
    • Troubleshoot and maintain VPN software.
    • Report network and server problems to ENS and the Medical Center IT support and help resolve issues.
    • Attend daily CVRI IT meetings.
  • Server Support (25%)
    • Configure and maintain servers for backup (Retrospect), databases, file sharing servers, and application servers.
    • Bigfix installation and Bigfix console management.
  • Other (10%)
    • Manage Screen Connect remote software.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in related area; and/or equivalent experience/training.
  • Minimum 1 year of related experience.
  • Demonstrated technical skills and knowledge of Macintosh and PC hardware, servers, peripherals, and software.
  • Proven ability to install, configure, and upgrade desktop systems.
  • Knowledge of wide area and local networks and the ability to troubleshoot problems and coordinate solutions.
  • Excellent communication skills and ability to instruct/train users.
  • Server file sharing, application management, and Active Directory.

The final salary and offer components are subject to additional approvals based on UC policy. Your placement within the salary range is dependent on a number of factors including your work experience and internal equity within this position classification at UCSF. For positions that are represented by a labor union, placement within the salary range will be guided by the rules in the collective bargaining agreement.
