This position is located in New York. Under the general supervision of the Supervising Tax Auditor (STA) II, the Business Taxes Specialist (BTS) I independently conducts the most difficult and complex audits, typically involving large industrial corporations with substantial tax liability and reporting errors. The role includes conducting fraud/tax evasion audits, testifying in court, making audit appointments, meeting with taxpayers and their representatives, explaining audit findings, preparing audit reports, and performing related duties. This position may rotate into the audit review role and is designated as a mobile worker position, requiring the incumbent to spend 50% or more of their time working at various locations other than their home or office in a single day. Positions outside of California require at least 50% out-of-state travel, including overnight stays.
Under Government Code 14200, this position may be eligible for partial telework for eligible candidates residing in California. All telework/hybrid schedules require staff to report to the office a minimum number of days per week, subject to change.
Responsibilities
- Independently conduct the most difficult and complex audits of large industrial corporations with substantial tax liability and reporting errors.
- Conduct fraud/tax evasion audits and testify in court regarding liabilities determined.
- Make audit appointments and meet with taxpayers and their representatives.
- Explain audit findings and prepare appropriate audit reports and written correspondence to taxpayers.
- Perform other related duties as necessary, including rotating into the audit review position.
- Travel at least 50% of the time, including overnight travel for positions outside of California.
Pay
$8,052.00 - $10,079.00 per month. New to State candidates will be hired into the minimum salary of the classification or minimum of alternate range when applicable.
