Business Intelligence & Analytics II (Hybrid)
About the Company
Established in 2003, the University of Massachusetts Amherst Foundation (UMAF) is a private 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to raising philanthropic support for the University of Massachusetts Amherst and advancing the University's mission and strategic priorities. Located on the Amherst campus, UMAF operates as a separately governed nonprofit organization while working closely with the University community. The Foundation serves as a best-practices resource for fundraising strategy and implementation and supports advancement professionals through strong data, technology, and operational capabilities. UMAF is committed to building a diverse, collaborative, and mission-driven workplace where employees are encouraged to bring new perspectives, demonstrate curiosity, and contribute meaningfully to organizational success.
About the Role
UMAF is seeking an experienced Senior Director, Business Intelligence & Analytics to join its Advancement Operations division and report directly to the Associate Vice President of Advancement Operations. The Senior Director will lead UMAF's Business Intelligence and Analytics function and own the end-to-end analytics pipeline, from data architecture and data governance through reporting, dashboard development, and business insights. The role will work primarily across Snowflake, Tableau, and Salesforce Education Cloud (UMAX) to build reliable data infrastructure, maintain high data-quality standards, develop self-service reporting capabilities, and translate complex data into actionable recommendations.
The ideal candidate is an investigative, technically strong, and business-oriented analytics leader who can move from a business question to a data investigation and ultimately to a clear, actionable finding. This person will also establish strong documentation practices and leverage AI tools such as ChatGPT, Claude, Copilot, or Cortex as part of analytical and documentation workflows. Success in this role means leadership can confidently make decisions using trusted dashboards and reporting rather than relying on repeated one-off data requests.

- Respond to analytical requests from leadership and advancement teams.
- Translate complex data findings into clear, audience-appropriate insights and recommendations.
- Establish and monitor KPIs, benchmarks, and performance measures in partnership with organizational leadership.
- Investigate unusual or inconsistent data and determine when deeper analysis is required.
- Team Leadership:
- Serve as the functional lead for the BI & Analytics team.
- Establish priorities, manage workload, and coordinate team deliverables.
- Review analytics and reporting outputs for accuracy, logic, consistency, and documentation quality.
- Support hiring, performance management, professional development, and team planning in partnership with the Associate Vice President.
- Foster a team culture where documentation, data quality, reconciliation, and knowledge sharing are standard practices.
- Establish processes that enable team members to independently build and maintain reporting solutions.
- Data Governance & Documentation:
- Develop and maintain a comprehensive enterprise data dictionary supporting self-service reporting across UMAF departments.
- Establish and enforce data governance standards, including field definitions, data stewardship responsibilities, and change-management processes.
- Document reporting logic, methodologies, calculations, and data sources so team members can independently trace and reproduce results.
- Partner with Gift & Donor Services and Prospect Development to align data definitions and reporting standards.
- Promote consistent data practices across Advancement Operations.
- Improve the quality, accessibility, transparency, and usability of organizational data.
- Other Duties:
- Support organizational growth initiatives, technology projects, analytics priorities, and other strategic projects as assigned.
- Contribute to continuous improvement of UMAF's data infrastructure, reporting capabilities, and business intelligence practices.
