Business Development Specialist
This role will be based in California, Oregon, or Washington and is a hybrid position requiring at least three days a week in the office.
About the role
In this role, you will engage with all types of Business Development Team partners: retail insurance agencies, wholesalers, MGUs, MGAs, and Aggregators. You will oversee a significant portfolio of potential accounts and ensure consistent agency management activity by leveraging your existing network of agency partners and insights from comprehensive research. Additionally, you will support senior colleagues specializing in diverse markets and industries, contributing to various stages of the deal process to gain extensive exposure, establish new connections, and acquire valuable experience.
Responsibilities
- Develop the assigned territory through all existing and prospective Business Development Team channels.
- Manage the existing client base in the region to support organic growth through new business generation and renewal retention, prospecting, and developing new relationships.
- Travel frequently to visit new, existing, and prospective clients in the territory, working closely with underwriting and Business Development Team management to ensure superior service for clients and their insureds.
- Engage in strategic planning for your territory’s growth and expansion, new product development, and other production-oriented activities.
- Serve as a client advocate and consultative advisor on the company’s products and services as well as the marketplace at large.
- Collaborate with underwriting staff to jointly develop relationships.
- Engage with partners at industry events and become a valuable resource for the assigned territory.
Requirements
- Holds a bachelor’s degree or equivalent education and work experience.
- 1+ years of insurance industry experience in professional liability (PL) or commercial lines, with direct experience working with external brokers, clients, or partners.
- Demonstrated experience in broker-facing marketing and sales activities (relationship building, outreach, proposal/support, and account development).
- Excellent communication, time management, and teamwork skills, with a consistent drive for results.
- Proven track record of achieving desired outcomes.
- Holds appropriate licenses or has the ability to obtain them within a short time frame.
- Willingness to travel up to 50% of the time within the assigned territory and attend industry events.
Qualifications
- Experience as a wholesale broker.
- Experience in retail insurance.
- Proven experience in managing and growing a book of business in the property and casualty insurance sector.
- Familiarity with working alongside underwriters.

Pay
The applicable base salary range for this role is $71,700 to $152,800. The base pay offered will be determined on factors such as experience, skills, training, location, certifications, education, and any applicable minimum wage requirements. Decisions will be determined on a case-by-case basis. In addition to the base salary, this position may be eligible for performance-based incentives.
