Business Development Officer III
About the Role
The Business Development Officer III (BDO III) is responsible for developing new deposit, loan, and treasury services for a specific target market, providing superior customer relations and service, and ensuring compliance with Bank policies and procedures. This role focuses on attaining individual, department, and Bank goals through active participation in sales management, managing an active pipeline and customer prospects, and controlling expenses related to local budgets. BDO III incumbents have an established client list and actively call on contacts to build loan, deposit, and treasury business for the Bank.
This position also involves coaching and mentoring branch staff in small business lending, retail business customer acquisition, and general sales, credit, loan documentation, loan closing, and regulatory compliance knowledge.
Responsibilities
- Service Excellence:
- Adhere to and promote Service Excellence standards among peers.
- Lead Service Excellence huddles in partnership with the supported Branch.
- Reinforce superior customer service through personal example and follow-through, including resolving inquiries, escalating issues as needed, and ensuring timely resolution.
- Production:
- Engage in business development activities, including soliciting new business prospects and participating in community affairs, business, and service organizations.
- Maintain a positive sales environment through education on the Bank’s products and services.
- Meet with customers to discuss needs, outline appropriate Bank services, and resolve problems.
- Contribute to Bank profitability by managing loan and deposit pricing to meet profitability/NIM goals and assisting in cost controls and income generation, including non-interest income.
- Apply sound decision-making techniques within assigned approval limits and existing policies and procedures.
- Participate in internal committees as assigned by management.
- Use the Bank’s operating systems accurately to perform job duties.
- Portfolio Management:
- Manage the loan portfolio, ensuring compliance with Large Loan Servicing standards, covenants, borrowing bases, loan maturities, renewals, and collection efforts.
- Monitor and follow up on significant changes in the status of existing customers, taking action for risk rating or line limit changes.
- Collaborate with the Credit Analyst to review annual financial statements, covenants, and borrowing base monitoring.
- Ensure changes in loan or relationship status are reflected in the core system.
- Conduct post-loan closing reviews to verify accuracy of customer data, billing/payments, and loan details in the system of record.
- Collaboration:
- Collaborate with the Credit Department on loan structure, underwriting, and approvals.
- Develop professional relationships with the Branch Manager and Retail Market/Area Manager to foster open communication.
- Provide coaching and mentoring to Branch staff on customer/community presentations, calling efforts, deposit and loan growth, and product suitability.
- Mentor/train staff on general sales, credit, loan documentation, loan closing, and regulatory compliance.
- Provide feedback to the Branch Manager regarding branch personnel performance.
- Work with Branch staff to process, solve, and answer complex customer transactions, problems, or inquiries.
- Safety and Soundness:
- Ensure compliance with Bank security precautions to protect customer deposits, bank assets, and staff.
- Assist in the Bank’s compliance with regulatory requirements and sales growth goals by participating in CRA activities and public relations programs (e.g., first-time home buyer programs, trade shows, economic and community development groups).
- Prepare routine and special reports as required.
- Maintain advanced knowledge of financial industry status and trends.
- Complete annual compliance courses within assigned due dates.
- Adhere to corporate policies and procedures, as well as Federal and State regulations and laws, including the Bank Secrecy Act and the Anti-Money Laundering Act.
- Perform other duties as required.
Requirements
- Education & Experience:
- Bachelor’s degree in business, finance, or a related field, or equivalent work experience.
- Business or financial industry-related educational experience through in-house training, formal schooling, or industry curriculum.
- Intermediate knowledge of Bank operations, products, and services, as well as related state and federal laws and regulations.
- Excellent organizational and time management skills, with the ability to work with minimal supervision.
- Skills:
- Intermediate skills in computer terminal and personal computer operation, including mainframe systems, word processing, spreadsheet, and specialty software programs.
- Exceptional verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills.
- Ability to apply common sense to carry out instructions and instruct personnel.
- Physical Demands:
- Requires vision, hearing, speech, and dexterity.
- Valid driver’s license required.
- Ability to stand, walk, sit, and use hands and fingers.
- Ability to work the hours and days required to complete essential functions.
