Atlanta Life Insurance Company, founded in 1905 by Alonzo F. Herndon—a formerly enslaved man—has been a pioneer in stakeholder capitalism, diversity, equity, and inclusion. The company was created to address the lack of financial security for families in times of loss and has since grown into a vehicle for protection, generational wealth, and career opportunities for underserved communities. In 2023, Atlanta Life was acquired by Atlanta Life Holdings, a group of African-American entrepreneurs and executives dedicated to continuing Herndon’s mission. Today, the company serves as a benefits provider, reinsurer of group benefits programs, and partner for Supplier Diversity and DEI goals.
