About the role
This job requires 4 days a week in an M&T corporate office. Locations across the M&T footprint are open.
Responsible for the quality and efficiency of the underwriting for Business Banking. Interacts on a daily basis with the Credit teams and sales partners regarding the underwriting of Business Banking loan requests.
Responsibilities
- Oversee the day-to-day activities of a team of Underwriters and/or Portfolio Managers, ensuring quality and efficiency in underwriting.
- Serve as the point person for work requests, prioritize and assign work, and monitor workflow.
- Support various segments in terms of credit functions.
- Manage and support the sales override process.
- Oversee the training of new underwriters and/or portfolio managers as required.
- Provide ongoing training to the department.
- Develop training materials and various forms.
- Maintain work logs and prepare monthly productivity reports for management, as well as other reports as needed.
- Coordinate updates to divisional processes and policies, write procedures, and develop analysis templates as needed.
- Resolve policy, procedure, accounting, or credit issues that occur.
- Participate in various departmental projects associated with the Credit Function.
- Maintain an in-depth knowledge of accounting pronouncements and their effect on Bank credits.
- Exercise managerial authority concerning staffing, performance appraisals, salary recommendations, promotions, hiring, terminations, performance management, and training, coaching, and mentoring.
- Adhere to applicable compliance and operational risk controls in accordance with Company or regulatory standards and policies.
- Promote an environment that supports belonging and reflects the M&T Bank brand.
- Maintain M&T internal control standards, including timely implementation of internal and external audit points and issues raised by external regulators.
- Complete other related duties as assigned.
Supervisory/Managerial Responsibilities
Supervises and mentors a team (up to 7), comprised of credit staff, portfolio managers, and administrative staff.
Requirements
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related discipline and a minimum of 5 years' commercial credit experience or relevant analytical experience with a strong knowledge of accounting principles, including 2 years of coaching/training/mentoring or work leadership experience.
- OR, in lieu of a degree, a combined minimum of 9 years' higher education and/or work experience, including a minimum of 5 years of commercial credit experience with a strong knowledge of accounting principles, including 2 years of coaching/training/mentoring or work leadership experience.
- Proficiency with personal computers and relevant software packages.

- Extensive knowledge of Bank's credit policies and procedures.
- Prior experience in a sales role.
Pay
The pay range for this position is $89,600.00 - $149,300.00 Annual (USD). The successful candidate’s particular combination of knowledge, skills, and experience will inform their specific compensation.
