Bus Technician

Salary: $70,000 to 82,000 (plus additional stipend)

Qualifications

  • Successful completion of one (1) year of training in automotive technology at an accredited community college or vocational school.
  • Certification as a Master Mechanic or equivalent work experience of two (2) years.
  • Must own and maintain adequate hand tools to perform work assigned.
  • Must be able to read, write, speak, understand, and communicate in English sufficiently to perform the duties of this position.

Licenses and Certifications

  • Must possess, or be able to secure within three (3) months of start date, a valid commercial driver’s license with all applicable endorsements to operate a school vehicle.
  • Must be or become proficient in the operation of both a standard and automatic transmission school bus.
  • Meets all requirements for the criminal history background check and motor vehicle driver’s abstract.

Responsibilities

  • Inspect and maintain the safe operation of all transportation department vehicles in accordance with all State of New Jersey requirements.
  • Maintain all maintenance records and reports as per the State of New Jersey requirements.
  • Work with other repair and transportation staff in preparing for vehicle state inspection and in repairing deficiencies found during such inspection.
  • Follow through and repair problems reported by drivers and/or other district personnel.
  • Order and maintain inventory of parts, supplies, and equipment as needed.
  • Respond to emergency call-outs in the event of school vehicle breakdown and/or accident.
  • Available for overtime as needed.
  • Maintain good housekeeping in all assigned areas, including garage/shop/office and storage areas.
  • Use a high level of safety at all times.
  • Use electronic recording devices if required (e.g., computer repair programs).
  • Use time efficiently to fulfill requirements of duties and ensure vehicles are ready for daily scheduled use.
  • Check fluid levels, service, and refuel all district-owned vehicles.
  • Report all accidents and damage to district-owned vehicles to the Transportation Coordinator.
  • Perform other duties and repairs as assigned.

$70,000 to 82,000 (plus additional stipend)
