METRO Bus Operators are trained in both classroom and on-the-job settings to safely transport passengers over local and distant routes according to time schedules and special services. Operators interact professionally with passengers, perform pre-trip inspections, and comply with all applicable rules and safety procedures.
Responsibilities
- Operate METRO buses safely and courteously according to schedules, policies, and procedures.
- Pick up necessary supplies (e.g., route signs, defect cards) before starting work assignments.
- Inspect bus equipment, including wheelchair ramps/lifts and radio systems, and report defects.
- Deposit route signs, passenger count cards, defect cards, and other materials in designated receptacles.
- Follow parking and return procedures for METRO vehicles at garages, relief points, and other locations.
- Sign on/off fare boxes, radios, and other equipment as required.
- Comply with ADA requirements and regulate heating, lighting, and ventilation for passenger comfort.
- Adhere to local traffic regulations and fare collection procedures.
- Report and follow up on accidents or unusual incidents involving METRO buses.
- Maintain compliance with METRO’s Uniform Policy and DOT card requirements.
- Follow the Labor Agreement, Employee Performance Code, and Work Rules.
- Provide excellent customer service to internal and external customers.
- Apply Safety Management System (SMS) methods and support METRO’s Public Agency Safety Plan (PTASP).
- Promote safety awareness and perform other job-related duties as required.
Requirements
- High school diploma or GED.
- Minimum of three (3) years of general work experience, including driving and customer service.
- Preferred: Two (2) years of continued employment in a direct public contact position.
- Must be at least 21 years old and have held a valid driver’s license for at least three (3) years.
- Must possess or be able to obtain a valid Texas Driver’s License and a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) or Commercial Learner’s Permit (CLP).
- Must meet METRO’s motor vehicle record requirements.
- Must pass a pre-employment performance evaluation, DOT physical, drug/alcohol screen, background investigation, and pre-employment assessments.
- Bilingual ability is a plus.
Disqualifying Criteria
- Two or more DUI/DWI convictions (no time limit).
- Any DUI/DWI convictions within the past three (3) years.
- Invalid, suspended, or revoked driver’s license.
- More than two (2) moving violations in the past three (3) years.
- Job-related felony/misdemeanor convictions (reviewed case-by-case).
- Former TransDev employees separated less than 12 months are ineligible.
Pay
$24.43 per hour.
Schedule
- Full-time shifts vary and may include holidays, weekends, and nights.
- Assigned to one of METRO’s five Bus Operating Facilities for at least six (6) months unless a general sign-up occurs.
