Reports to: Director of Transportation

About the role

The School Bus Monitor assists the school bus driver in maintaining a safe, orderly, and positive environment for students while they are being transported to and from school and school-related activities. The monitor provides additional supervision and support to students, particularly those who require assistance during transportation.

Responsibilities

  • Assist the bus driver in maintaining a safe and orderly environment on the school bus.
  • Monitor students while they are entering, riding, and exiting the bus.
  • Assist students with boarding and exiting the bus as needed.
  • Help students remain properly seated and follow all bus safety rules and procedures.
  • Maintain appropriate supervision of students throughout the route.
  • Assist students with special needs or disabilities as directed and trained.
  • Monitor student behavior and report disciplinary or safety concerns to the bus driver and appropriate transportation personnel.
  • Assist with securing mobility devices, safety equipment, or other student transportation needs when properly trained.
  • Help maintain a clean and safe bus environment.
  • Follow all district transportation policies, safety procedures, and applicable laws and regulations.
  • Maintain confidentiality regarding student information.
  • Communicate effectively and professionally with students, parents, school personnel, and transportation staff.
  • Respond appropriately to emergencies and follow established emergency procedures.
  • Attend required training and safety meetings.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent preferred.
  • Previous experience working with children is preferred.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with students and adults.
  • Ability to maintain a calm and professional demeanor when managing student behavior.
  • Ability to work effectively as part of a team.
  • Must be able to follow written and verbal instructions.
  • Must successfully complete all required district screenings, background checks, and training.

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions

  • Ability to sit for extended periods while riding on a school bus.
  • Ability to assist students with boarding, exiting, and moving safely within the bus.
  • Ability to bend, stoop, reach, and occasionally lift or assist students as required.
  • Ability to work around noise, traffic, weather conditions, and other transportation-related environments.
  • Must be able to respond quickly to student safety concerns or emergencies.

Pay

Pay grade follows the BISD Compensation Plan.

  • BISD pays $325.00 towards medical premium.
  • BISD provides a $10,000 Life Insurance Policy.
  • BISD provides Telehealth premium for employee.

Schedule

This position may require morning and afternoon transportation routes and occasional transportation for extracurricular activities.
