Bus Monitor (Anticipated Openings 2026-2027)

About the role

School Bus Monitors are responsible for assisting children with getting on and off of the school bus safely. They ensure students are properly seated and facing forward during the bus ride and monitor their safety until they reach their destination.

Responsibilities

  • Ensure children are properly seated and facing forward at all times
  • Maintain order aboard the school bus at all times
  • Assist children with getting on and off the bus at all times
  • Ensure children are allowed off the bus at their proper stop and are released to their guardian/parent if applicable
  • Follow basic principles of child safety at all times
  • Establish good relationships with bus drivers, school staff, parents, and children
  • Work in conjunction with the bus driver to ensure no child is left aboard the bus upon completion of its route
  • Convey information effectively and possess active listening skills
  • Use problem-solving skills incorporating sensitivity and speech clarity
  • Follow general rules when caring for children
  • Have knowledge of public safety and security policies and procedures
  • Absorb and apply knowledge of child behavior and exercise appropriate disciplinary techniques
  • Know relevant equipment aboard their vehicles, policies, and procedures
  • Work both morning and afternoon shifts daily

Requirements

  • High School Diploma
  • Associates Degree preferred
  • Minimum age requirement: 21 years old
  • City of Springfield resident

  • Knowledge of public safety and security policies and procedures
  • Ability to assess the needs of children and those around them
  • Knowledge of relevant equipment aboard their vehicles, policies, and procedures
  • Self-motivated and able to work with minimal supervision
  • Professional demeanor at all times
  • Conduct themselves in a professional manner at all times
  • Follow general rules when caring for children
  • Knowledge of child behavior and appropriate disciplinary techniques
  • Ability to follow general rules when caring for children
  • Work both morning and afternoon shifts daily

Benefits

Hours and schedule are determined annually. Part-time, seasonal employment only during school sessions. Tobacco products and electronic devices are strictly prohibited. Must be self-motivated and able to work with minimal supervision.

Pay

$17.88 hourly rate
