About the role

The Bus Mechanic ensures the availability of district vehicles in safe operating condition by diagnosing, repairing, and performing preventive maintenance. Responsibilities include documenting repairs to meet district, state, and federal requirements.

Responsibilities

  • Diagnoses vehicle malfunctions to determine needed repairs and/or replacements.
  • Fabricates parts necessary for repairs.
  • Inspects assigned vehicles (e.g., brake systems, oil levels, coolant, tire pressure, wiper blades, fan belts, exterior and interior condition) to ensure safe operation.
  • Performs routine vehicle maintenance (e.g., oil changes, tire rotation, brake checks) to meet mandated requirements.
  • Performs minor body work (e.g., front ends, upholstery) to maintain vehicle appearance and safety.
  • Prepares written materials (e.g., repair logs, parts lists, warranty claims) to document activities and meet regulatory requirements.
  • Responds to road calls for emergency repairs on disabled vehicles.
  • Attends unit in-service and safety meetings to convey or gather job-related information.
  • Cleans assigned vehicles, both interior and exterior, to maintain appearance, sanitation, and safety.
  • Maintains tools, equipment, and shop area to ensure availability and safety.
  • Maintains records of repairs, costs, and vehicle warranties to meet regulatory requirements.
  • Repairs vehicle systems and components (e.g., diesel/gasoline engines, transmissions, differentials, clutches) to ensure safe operation.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned to support work unit efficiency.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED preferred.
  • Valid Driver’s License; CDL with “P” and “S” endorsements must be obtained within six months of hire.
  • Considerable experience as an automotive or heavy equipment mechanic.

Qualifications

  • Written and oral communication skills.
  • Electro-mechanical abilities.
  • Knowledge of vehicle maintenance methods, hazardous material storage/removal, and safety practices.
  • Strong understanding of gasoline and diesel engine principles.

Physical Demands

  • Routine physical activities including walking, standing, kneeling, negotiating stairs and ladders.
  • Ability to lift and transport up to 75 pounds over short distances.

Schedule

249 work days per year.
