About the Role

This position provides support within student transportation services, focusing on assisting special education students during transport to and from school and special activities. The role ensures the safety and sanitation of assigned vehicles.

Responsibilities

  • Assists in emergency bus evacuations to ensure student and passenger safety.
  • Helps special education students and other passengers with safe loading and unloading from buses during normal and emergency situations.
  • Directs students to enforce rules and regulations, maintaining student safety and well-being.
  • Monitors students with special needs until released to a teacher, instructional assistant, parent, or guardian.
  • Prepares reports (e.g., incident reports, passenger misconduct) to document activities and comply with guidelines.
  • Reports observations and incidents (e.g., discipline issues, accidents, inappropriate behavior) to appropriate personnel.
  • Secures students and their equipment (e.g., restraints, wheelchair tie-downs, seat belts) to ensure safety.
  • Attends and completes Crisis Prevention Institute (CPI) training and implements CPI techniques for de-escalation.
  • Attends unit meetings, in-service training, and workshops to gather job-related information.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned to support the efficient functioning of the work unit.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • No prior job-related experience required.

Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities

  • Skills: Ability to perform single tasks using existing skills, including adhering to safety practices, preparing accurate records, and operating equipment (e.g., fire extinguisher, two-way radio, wheelchairs, tie-downs, child safety seats, lifts).
  • Knowledge: Ability to read and follow instructions, understand written and oral instructions, and familiarity with safety practices, emergency evacuation techniques, health standards, bus policies, and two-way radio communication.
  • Abilities: Schedule activities, collate data, and use job-related equipment. Flexibility to work with diverse individuals and data. Problem-solving within prescribed guidelines. Ability to communicate with diverse groups, maintain confidentiality, work as part of a team, display tact and courtesy, and exercise sound judgment.

Working Conditions

  • Requires significant physical demands, including lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling, climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, and fine finger dexterity.
  • Typical work involves 85% sitting, 10% walking, and 5% standing.
  • Performed under some temperature extremes and conditions with exposure to risk of injury or illness.
