Bulk Commodities Handler - 2nd Shift

About the Role

This position is primarily responsible for working at facilities that unload barges of bulk and/or break bulk products. Responsibilities will vary depending on daily operational needs and type of facility.

Responsibilities

• Fully participate in the company Safety Program and attend daily pre-shift meetings.
• Perform all duties within compliance of OSHA, company safety, and environmental regulations (ISO where applicable), including wearing appropriate PPE for tasks being performed.
• Perform deckhand responsibilities such as securing barges, reading drafts, opening/closing/removing/placing lids, tying off barges, etc.
• Operate a skid loader inside barges during the final stage of unloading.
• Set up and operate conveyor systems, where applicable.
• Ensure correct product is directed to the correct storage area.
• Perform clean-up of barges post-unloading by sweeping and/or shoveling.
• Load railcars and trucks to specifications, where applicable.
• Complete documentation timely, accurately, and legibly.
• Operate a variety of heavy equipment and perform preventive maintenance (PM), where applicable.
• Assist in general housekeeping of the entire work area.
• Other duties as assigned.

Requirements

• High school diploma or equivalent, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
• Preferred: 1 year of experience working in an industrial environment with a dependable work record.
• Basic mathematical skills (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division).
• Effective interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills.
• Ability to complete documentation requirements.
• Ability to follow directions, use logical thought processes, interpret instructions, and troubleshoot problems.
• Ability to work well both independently and within a team environment.
• Ability to use tools appropriate for assigned tasks.
• Commitment to exceptional customer service, both internally and externally.

• Constantly/continuously balance, bend, stoop, twist, crouch, crawl, kneel, and squat.
• Frequently climb stairs, ladders, and work at significant heights.
• Constantly/continuously concentrate on tasks without distraction.
• Distinguish grade, color, odor, and damage characteristics in grain samples (at some facilities).
• Distinguish differences in odor intensity or quality using the nose.
• Enter information into a computer.
• Frequently grasp and reach.
• Lift, push, or pull up to 50 lbs. occasionally to continuously, depending on daily needs.
• Meet requirements for and utilize all applicable PPE.
• Pass all required testing under FRA and DOT for this position (where applicable).
• Work in confined spaces.
• Safely walk on barge surfaces and work around deep/swift water.
• Stand and walk constantly/continuously.
• Understand and communicate verbally, in person, and over two-way radio (including recognizing emergency alarms).
• Understand and communicate written instructions.
• Walk safely on top of railcars, open gates, operate vibrators, etc., where applicable.
• Work extended hours, weekends, holidays, and/or alternate shifts as needed.
• Work in environments with high dust levels around grain and other bulk products (where applicable).
• Work outside in extreme weather conditions.
• Remain acutely aware of surroundings and quickly adjust to signals or changes in the environment.
• Use near, far, and peripheral vision and depth perception for tasks; may need to identify problems with grain.

Work is performed both inside and outside in heat/cold, wet/humid, and dry/arid conditions. Frequently required to use personal protective equipment. Travel may be required (5%-20%), including off-site training and/or work at alternate locations.

Pay

The expected base pay range for this role is $16.50 - $25.00 per hour. Actual pay offered may vary depending on work location, job-related knowledge, skills, and relevant experience.
