About the role

Colliers Engineering & Design is seeking a Buildings/Structural Engineer to join our integrated Buildings team in Simsbury, CT. Our structural engineers design and analyze building frameworks that support architectural intent while meeting rigorous safety, code, and performance standards. We develop customized structural solutions for new construction, renovations, adaptive reuse, additions, and historic preservation projects, evaluating each system for strength, serviceability, constructability, and long-term resilience.

Responsibilities

  • Apply intermediate structural engineering concepts and principles to assigned design tasks.
  • Complete intermediate structural engineering design tasks under the direct supervision of a licensed professional engineer, with routine basic tasks performed with limited supervision.
  • Apply judgment skills to form opinions, draw conclusions, and take actions considering data, resources, constraints, and budgets; determine when to involve advanced technical staff.
  • Develop intermediate knowledge of architecture and other engineering disciplines and their relationship to structural engineering design and decisions.
  • Provide drafting assistance in REVIT under leadership direction and continually improve Revit modeling skills.
  • Serve as a mentor and technical advisor to junior staff and engineers.
  • Perform construction site visits with experienced engineers to observe existing conditions or construction progression.
  • Demonstrate investigative competency of general construction practices.
  • Effectively work and communicate as part of an architectural and engineering design team (collaborate, coordinate, contribute, respect).
  • Be a technical resource and mentor to interns and Co-op students.
  • Perform general construction administration tasks such as shop drawing review, Requests for Information (RFI), etc.
  • Understand project scope, schedules, and budgetary restraints; demonstrate basic knowledge of a project's general financial structure and the impact of individual contributions on profitability.
  • Demonstrate basic client management skills and develop business relationships.
  • Verbally communicate general technical ideas, concepts, and information to technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Read, write, and understand English for job-related communications and instructions.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in Civil Engineering or Architectural Engineering with emphasis on structural design (ABET accredited).
  • 3-6 years of professional experience as a Structural Engineer, preferably in the Buildings space.
  • Engineer in Training (EIT) required; Professional Engineer (PE) preferred in Connecticut.
  • Intermediate knowledge of performing structural engineering calculations using computer software, spreadsheets, and hand calculations.
  • Intermediate skill level and understanding of Revit with willingness to progress toward an advanced level.
  • Intermediate understanding of structural engineering software such as RISA, RAM, TEKLA, TEDDS, SAFE, PROFIS, with willingness to learn and become proficient.
  • Intermediate knowledge of current building and material design codes and standards such as IBC, ASCE7, AISC360, ACI318, ACI 530, NDS.
  • Intermediate working knowledge of non-technical computer software including Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Teams.
  • Effective time management skills, including meeting deadlines and excellent organizational/prioritizing skills.
  • Strong work ethic and commitment to high quality and accountability.
  • Good interpersonal skills and commitment to internal and external responsiveness; ability to maintain composure during challenging situations.
  • Self-reflective with a drive toward continued development (expand knowledge, improve skills and relationships).

Pay

$90,000 to $114,000 per year (depending on qualifications).
