Hiring range: $36.94 per hour. Full-time, non-exempt, regular position. Schedule: Monday–Friday, 7:30 AM–4:00 PM; weekends off. Onsite in Hanover, NH.

About the role

Performs scheduled and emergency maintenance and repair on Dartmouth College academic and administrative buildings, structures, fixtures, and utilities. Uses trade practices in plumbing, electrical, HVAC, carpentry, and related fields. Mentors junior Building Service Technicians and maintains expertise in campus building automation systems and complex systems such as RODI, pool certification, and heat recovery.

Responsibilities

  • Perform preventive maintenance on buildings, equipment, and utility systems (e.g., check plumbing/heating systems for leaks, lubricate moving parts, replace worn/corroded components, test/replace fluids).
  • Respond to work orders for repairs and replacements (e.g., electrical fixtures, plumbing, radiators, doors/windows, roof leaks, furniture).
  • Diagnose and repair electrical systems (e.g., replace fuses, relays, switches, motors, belts, filters).
  • Maintain, diagnose, and repair plumbing systems (e.g., faucet/toilet repairs, drinking fountain maintenance, pipe leak repairs).
  • Diagnose, maintain, and repair refrigeration cycles and HVAC/energy management systems, including root-cause analysis and impact assessment.
  • Use building automation systems to adjust programs and troubleshoot issues, with specific knowledge of RODI, pool certification, and heat recovery systems.
  • Read and interpret building plans; access college data sources for plans and O&M manuals.
  • Coordinate and schedule work with supervisors/peers, including ordering materials and planning work sequences.
  • Supervise and assist with new construction and remodeling projects, ensuring compliance with college standards.
  • Respond to energy management system alarms, perform temporary repairs when permanent fixes are delayed, and collaborate with Building Automation Technicians.
  • Mentor Building Service Technician I and II, explaining procedures and reasoning behind actions.
  • Use hand/power tools (e.g., PEX/press connections) and diagnostic equipment (e.g., multimeters, light/temperature/humidity meters).
  • Document issues, procedures, and work performed.
  • Work in physically demanding conditions, including heights, confined spaces, and potentially hazardous environments.
  • Participate in the college’s respiratory protection program and respond to alarms.
  • Obtain vendor training as required (online, local, or remote).
  • Complete mandatory training: driver safety, electrical safety, lock-out/tag-out, respirator use, fall protection, confined spaces, laboratory/hazardous waste, asbestos awareness, and bloodborne pathogens.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • 8+ years of experience with MEP (mechanical, electrical, plumbing) systems and controls.
  • Valid driver’s license and compliance with Dartmouth College Driver Safety Policy.
  • Carpentry skills (e.g., repair blackboards, raised floor systems).
  • Knowledge of fire alarm locks and door hardware.
  • Strong working knowledge of building electrical, water, and sanitary systems.
  • Ability to diagnose and repair refrigeration cycles.
  • Proficiency with HVAC/energy management systems and building automation programs.
  • Ability to use hand/power tools and diagnostic equipment (e.g., multimeters, light meters).
  • Strong problem-solving, customer service, and communication skills.
  • Basic computer skills (word processing, email, spreadsheets, building system programs) and smartphone proficiency for vendor software.
  • Ability to work independently, follow instructions, and analyze/evaluate issues.
  • Knowledge of Dartmouth College construction standards.
  • Physical ability to perform demanding tasks, work at heights, and handle manual dexterity requirements.
  • Willingness to work overtime and obtain further training.
