About the role

SMC is seeking an Entry Level Building Management System Engineer/Designer to help execute Controls design for mission critical projects. Typical project types include design of greenfield and brownfield data center facilities, fit-out packages for hyperscale and enterprise clients of colocation providers, and data center campus systems. This candidate will execute specific design tasks as part of a broader mechanical team while furthering their knowledge and developing their skills under the guidance of senior and mid-level engineers. The BMS design scope is part of a broader project, requiring coordination with internal design leads (mechanical, electrical, telecommunications, fire protection, plumbing) and external disciplines (architectural, civil, structural).

The ideal candidate has a strong work ethic, is eager to learn, and wants to grow their expertise and career at a rapid pace. This position is open to full-time, part-time, and internship/co-op applicants.

Responsibilities

  • Utilize Autodesk Revit to produce detailed design documents.
  • Assist with performing the design of systems network topology.
  • Build an understanding and ability to develop one-line detail diagrams.
  • Learn how to select and specify BMS equipment.
  • Assist with meeting project deadlines, including working necessary hours to complete major deliverables.
  • Review and gain an understanding of local and national construction codes and project specifications to grow a broader understanding of the construction process.
  • Use Microsoft tools such as Word, PowerPoint, Excel, and Teams.
  • Travel to project sites when required (less than 10% travel).
  • Communicate clearly with others in both written and spoken forms.
  • Take direction from senior and mid-level engineers and designers to execute delivery of specific design elements.
  • Work independently while coordinating with senior personnel and other disciplines.
  • Actively participate in training and mentoring opportunities to grow knowledge and capabilities.
  • Maintain excellent organizational skills, with the ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously.

Qualifications

  • 2 or 4-year degree in mechanical engineering or mechanical engineering technology preferred; HVAC construction experience with a drafting certification will also be considered.
  • Past internship, co-op, or work experience in a consulting engineering role is a plus.
  • Experience working in the construction industry is a plus.
  • Experience using Revit in either an educational or professional context is a plus.
  • Engineer-in-Training (EIT) certification is a plus.

Pay

Base compensation: $65,000–$100,000 (actual compensation varies based on education, experience, skills, and location).
