About the role

The City of Bloomington seeks a Building Inspector to ensure buildings comply with the Minnesota Building Code and approved plans.

Responsibilities

  • Review permits, plans, and specifications for consistency with codes and approved plans
  • Inspect all types of structures, signs, site grading, and erosion control installations
  • Issue certificates of occupancy
  • Investigate complaints and issue correction orders for persistent violations
  • Interpret and explain city ordinances and state codes to various stakeholders
  • Create and maintain inspection logs and records
  • Research new construction techniques and methods
  • Communicate observed violations to appropriate city staff
  • Communicate with homeowners, architects, engineers, contractors, and developers
  • Train employees and assist division manager

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED
  • Current State of Minnesota Limited Building Official License
  • Completion of trade school in construction-related trade or equivalent education in construction management or architecture
  • Four years of building trade experience
  • Demonstrated mechanical aptitude and understanding of building plans
  • Demonstrated knowledge of the MN State Building Code and inspection procedures
  • Demonstrated effective oral and written communication skills
  • Valid driver's license

Qualifications

  • Completion of trade school in construction-related trade or equivalent education in construction management or architecture
  • Four years of building trade experience
  • Demonstrated mechanical aptitude and understanding of building plans
  • Demonstrated knowledge of the MN State Building Code and inspection procedures
  • Demonstrated effective oral and written communication skills
  • Valid driver's license

  • Effectively manages time to maintain set schedule of inspections
