About the role
The City of Bloomington seeks a Building Inspector to ensure buildings comply with the Minnesota Building Code and approved plans.
Responsibilities
- Review permits, plans, and specifications for consistency with codes and approved plans
- Inspect all types of structures, signs, site grading, and erosion control installations
- Issue certificates of occupancy
- Investigate complaints and issue correction orders for persistent violations
- Interpret and explain city ordinances and state codes to various stakeholders
- Create and maintain inspection logs and records
- Research new construction techniques and methods
- Communicate observed violations to appropriate city staff
- Communicate with homeowners, architects, engineers, contractors, and developers
- Train employees and assist division manager
Requirements
- High School Diploma or GED
- Current State of Minnesota Limited Building Official License
- Completion of trade school in construction-related trade or equivalent education in construction management or architecture
- Four years of building trade experience
- Demonstrated mechanical aptitude and understanding of building plans
- Demonstrated knowledge of the MN State Building Code and inspection procedures
- Demonstrated effective oral and written communication skills
- Valid driver's license
Qualifications

- Four years of building trade experience
- Demonstrated mechanical aptitude and understanding of building plans
