Building-Based Substitute Teacher - Elementary Schools

Location: Elementary schools across the district. Each Building-Based Substitute Teacher will be assigned to a specific partner school, with occasional coverage at a partner school if not needed at the assigned location.

About the role

The Building-Based Substitute Teacher covers educator absences by providing instruction, managing classroom activities, and fostering a safe, engaging, and nurturing learning environment. The role supports learners' physical, social, and emotional development while delivering academic instruction and choice-ready skills.

  • Cover educator absences by following established educational plans.
  • May cover paraprofessional openings, learner supervision, or bus-loop duties if no teacher openings are available.
  • Use district behavioral plans to promote positive learner behavior.
  • Foster a safe, equitable, and conducive learning environment.
  • Apply knowledge of federal and state education laws.
  • Guide learning toward curriculum goals and communicate objectives clearly to learners.

Requirements

  • North Dakota Substitute Teaching License (required).
  • North Dakota Teaching License (preferred).
  • Experience working in a school setting (preferred).
  • Experience as a substitute teacher (preferred).
  • Ability to read, write, and comprehend simple instructions and correspondence in English.
  • Effective verbal, expressive, and reactive communication skills.
  • Exercise confidentiality, discretion, and good judgment.
  • Maintain regular and punctual attendance.

Physical demands

  • Regularly required to reach with hands and arms, stand, walk, bend, talk, and hear.
  • Requires close and peripheral vision.
  • May be required to lift up to 30 pounds.
  • Work involves managing competing demands in an environment with noise levels ranging from quiet to loud.

Pay

Full daily rate: $200.00 per day. A $130 bonus is awarded after completing 10 full-time substitute days in the district (non-consecutive). Bonus payment is issued on the next payday following the 10th full-time day.

Schedule

Follows school operation hours, beginning 15 minutes before learner contact time and ending 15 minutes after. Workdays align with the 2026-2027 school year term.
